Narrative Writing I can write narratives using effective techniques, descriptive details, and logical sequencing for any experience or event. .

Narrative = A sequence of connected events, whether real or fictional.
Examples: memoirs, biographies, poetry, television/movie scripts, songs Narrative writing can be non-fictional and fictional.

The way that characters speak hints at their underlying desires, motivations, opinions.
Monologue = One character’s inner thoughts Synonyms for “said”: babbled scolded sighed croaked jeered chuckled whispered stuttered vowed corrected moaned reassured Conversation between two or more people in a work of literature. = Dialogue

The Odyssey Example: page 905 line 308 Out of the cave the mammoth Polyphemus roared in answer: “Nohbdy, Nohbdy’s tricked me. Nohbdy’s ruined me!” To this rough shout they made a sage reply: “Ah well if nobody has played you foul there in your lonely bed, we are no use in pain given by great Zeus. Let it be your father, Poseidon Lord, to whom you pray.”

The act of creating and describing characters in literature. = Characterization includes both descriptions of a character’s physical attributes as well as the character’s personality. Direct = Telling the audience what a character is like. “Bill was short and had a bald spot that could be seen through his thinning hairline.” Indirect = Showing the audience a character through the character’s thoughts, words, or actions. “Bill sighed as he watched the barber comb what was left of his thinning hair.

Things to think about when developing a character:
Name Age Hometown Family Personality Mood How would they react to …. What do they want? What is their biggest secret? Successes Failures Goals You want to make this character feel real!

setting can also include social statuses, weather, historical period, and details about immediate surroundings. Examples: I was sitting at my desk at work when… It was sometime past midnight and… The rain was howling outside… real or fictional, or a combination The time and place in which the story takes place. = Setting
