1 5.2 Dividing Polynomials

2 Dividing by a monomial Example 1:

3 Remember!

4 Polynomial Long Division - Same format as dividing numbers
Polynomial Long Division - Same format as dividing numbers. Use FILLERS for standard form! Example 2: Divide x3 – 4x2 + 8 by x – 1

5 Example 3 Simplify: (4x2 – 8x – 7)(2x – 3)–1

6 Example 4: a. (y4 + 2y2 – y + 5) divided by (y2 – y +1)

7 Synthetic Division Example 5: a. x3 – x2 –2x + 8 by x – 1
- Used when divisor is in the form x – k. - Polynomial must be in standard form. Use FILLERS if terms are missing. - Create a polynomial out of coefficients that are left under the line. - The power of the first term is one less than the degree of the dividend. - The final number is the remainder. Example 5: a. x3 – x2 –2x + 8 by x – 1

8 Example 6: Find the Remainder
2x3 + 13x – 7 by x + 6

9 Example 7: Simplfiy. (4y4 – 6y2 + 4y – 1) (y – 2)-1

10 Example 8
