Careers Most people spend over 40 Years working for a living. In the early days, careers work focused on matching individuals to specific opportunities in education and work; Many people followed in family’s footsteps. Today a career is a personal journey through choice! That includes learning, work and career breaks both planned and unplanned. Career choices are influenced by personal circumstances; personal aspirations and external forces; company reorganisation, new technology and retraining. Careers Education

What’s the point of Careers?
The purpose of careers education is to help young people develop the knowledge and skills they need to make successful choices, manage transitions and learning and move into work. Careers Work: Builds confidence and self- reliance Promotes positive attitudes to learning Improves progression Reduces NEETS (not in employment, education or training) Improves Literacy Raises Aspirations Careers Education

Answer: B. Paramedic Although you can study for a degree in paramedicine and you will require a Higher National Diploma. You can now study for a degree apprenticeship (Advance Apprenticeship). There are opportunities with both the police and national health service although competition is fierce. Careers Education

Aiming High What do you say to a female student who wants to be an Engineer? What do you say to someone who dreams of becoming an Entrepreneur? What do you say to a pupil who’s aspirations are to work in the square mile but is not passing any of their Maths units? You must say something, not nothing. Discuss their aspirations and help them to plan. If you don’t know, help them find out Careers Education

Aiming Low We have young people who are aiming far too low in terms of career ambitions. Why? Social Influence Lack of Confidence Lack of Awareness Geographical Influence Academic ability- Find alternatives Careers Education

Aim Right Compassion and understanding Overcome barriers by:
Developing students self awareness and investigative techniques. Encourage them to research and develop their local and national career knowledge. Talk about your experiences of education and employment. Ask questions and help them to make a plan Careers Education

What can we do? Become a Careers Expert in your field…
A Careers lesson, guest speaker or industry visit. Integration- integrate a students career plans into your lesson (develop transferrable skills). For those who are unsure, encourage them to look at their strengths , weaknesses and their enjoyments; are they practical? Do they mind the cold weather? Do they prefer their own company? Not a subject Teacher? Ask the students what they plan on doing in the future and how are they going to achieve this - what grades do they need? What subject and what level of course? Don’t just say YES! 60% of positions are never advertised!
We need to motivate, inspire and develop our young people’s transferable skills set and ensure that they are planning for their futures… before the end of year 11! Careers Education
