National Curriculum KS3/KS4
Aims: Briefly re-visit the reason for change Discuss its implications Go through a case study Discuss how different elements fit together How does this impact practice in a classroom Inform trainees’ development ‘flight path’ University input Change since 2014 Current yr11, Current Yr1o courses and KS5 structure Case study – discussion on what is current practice in your school – what to look for in primary placement? The Bigger picture – growth mindset, school websites, policies, assessment and all this to improve pedagogy Numeracy and literacy across the curriculum, effective feedback, Afl practices – why they are important and used as a measure to assess the quality of teach? Sum up – how does this inform my practice – data driven instruction
2
Key Stage 1-5 expectations
Setting suitable learning challenges Responding to pupils’ diverse learning needs Overcoming potential barriers to learning and assessment for individuals and groups of pupils
3
Why change the National Curriculum?
4
Implications of the change
Freedom to choose – leads to tighter accountability! Curriculum and assessment go hand in glove. So Levels/ A*-C scrapped!! Welcome to life without Levels!!
5
Case Study (30minutes) Imagine you are starting at this academy as an NQT. Please read and digest key points important to you as an employee (the impact on you as a teacher) Highlight terms/phrases new to you
7
Case Study (10minutes) Discussion on tables
Meanings of terms/phrases highlighted sharing understanding of the document Whole group discussion and summary

What do we want to achieve?
A system that: is based on developing the key knowledge and skills required for success in KS4/5 and the world of work is based on our high expected standards of students relies on formative feedback and allows all students to succeed – and so develops a growth mindset incorporates periodic summative assessment to support this ongoing formative feedback is simple and easy to understand – for staff, parents and students has consistent principles, to be used across subjects, but the flexibility to be suitable for all subjects Development of UTCs, skills needs, economic demands PLTS Personal Learning and Thinking Skills - Problem solving, independent learning, reflective, self managing, Creative thinkers…… Life beyond levels - task discuss on tables how KS3/KS4 is graded at your current school. Share at the end Do you agree? Do you find the descriptors easy to follow as a teacher/parent/pupil – discuss. What are the principles in your school? Does Mastery in one subject mean the same similar things in another subject area? How do we know??

The bigger picture Use the KS2 levels on entry to project a “flight path” (target grade range) to the new GCSE grades The flight paths are a target for the students but a planning tool for teachers
11
The bigger picture Subjects will need to over haul their assessments and their assessment process No need to assess everything- just at key points in the year and key skills? Long, mid term and short term plans – formative and summative assessment
12
The bigger picture Changes to secondary accountability
Performance tables for secondary schools, which will also be measured under new accountability measures, will be published in the early spring term 2017. The headline measures at KS4 will be: progress 8, attainment 8, the percentage of students achieving a grade C or above in English and maths, and the percentage of students achieving the EBacc. Former accountability measures will no longer be used, such as the 5 A*-C grade GCSEs including English and Maths measure. Like vs Like and takes into account prior attainment. Continued focus on literacy and numeracy across the curriculum
13
The bigger picture Numeracy & Literacy across the curriculum Why?
14
The bigger picture Those with poor numeracy rather than those with poor literacy were the group with the lowest levels of participation within the labour market. Poor numeracy is a huge and neglected problem.
According to the most recent Skills for Life survey, almost 17 million people in the UK have numeracy skills below those needed for the lowest grade at GCSE – for literacy the comparable figure
is 5 million… Changes at KS2 impacting on KS2 into 3 transition. The Mastery curriculum – fluency! Are children Secondary school ready? Closing the Gap!
15
Maths in your Subject By referring to your schemes of work we can identify what opportunities exist in our subject area, that satisfy the cross-curricular numeracy objectives.
18
The bigger picture Inspecting the impact of the teaching of literacy including reading Literacy includes the key skills of reading, writing and oral communication that enable pupils to access different areas of the curriculum. Inspectors will consider the impact of the teaching of literacy on outcomes across the curriculum. They will consider the extent to which the school intervenes to provide support for improving pupils’ literacy, especially for pupils at risk of underachieving.
19
The bigger picture Keeping all stakeholders (parents, Governors, external agencies) informed New school website requirements on policies, assessment, pupil premium grant & the publication of KS2 & KS4 results

Revised and more demanding curriculum at KS4 and KS5
Well rounded citizens Revised assessment system Well ounded – literate, numerate, + good at Personal Learning and Thinking skills, SMSC – focus on British values.

Impact of changes Table discussion (10 minutes)
List five things that you agree, must be kept in mind when planning lessons Give reasons for your choice Whole group discussion (10minutes) Progress and how we check it regularly – Assessment for Learning Literacy Numeracy Bigger picture – context i.e SoW becomes central to our work Using data to inform planning
25
Trainees flight path… Using data to inform planning
What are the sources of data? Collected by me as a teacher My observations (IRIS) Cumulative information (pastoral) Exam results
26
Trainees flight path… Collected by the teacher
Formative – AfL practices e.g. white borads, kahoot, logs, WWW, EBI, exit ticket, green penning, exam question… End of topic/unit tests Observations Purpose – implications on pedagogy
27
Trainees flight path… Cumulative
Factors beyond the school (safeguarding, mental health) G&T Purpose – identify need for intervention
28
Trainees flight path… Exam result analysis
Who is making good/better progress? Who isn’t? Identify source of underperformance, dig deeper i.e consider CAT scores, gender gaps Purpose – inform long term planning
