7.3 “Glory Road” Pre-Reading Activities

2 Introduction: You will be working to complete the introductory activities that will give you the background knowledge necessary to understand the deeper meaning of the screenplay, “Glory Road.” On the surface, the script is about basketball in the 1960’s, but underneath the surface are many themes that have deeper meaning. Once you complete all of the activities, we will begin reading, Glory Road!

3 Activity 1: Story and Theme Impression
Read The Sneetches, by Dr. Seuss and watch the movie by clicking on the links below: Read The Sneetches Watch Sneetches Movie Read The Southpaw, by Judith Viorst: 10-the-southpaw-by-judith-viorst Based on the two readings and the video, what do you infer this drama and its theme will be mainly about? Answer in complete sentences on your answer sheet.

5 Activity 3:Website Sampling
Directions: Check out the websites below and read through them. Each website is somehow connected to Glory Road. 6 Activity 4: “People Get Ready”: Theme Song “People Get Ready” Song
One of the theme songs in Glory Road is “People Get Ready” by Curtis Mayfield Listen to the song while reading the lyrics in your packet. What is this song about? Look for symbolism. Answer in complete sentences.

7 Activity 5: Getting to know the Team & Players
Directions: 1. Read the following sections of the website and answer the questions in the packet.  ”The Bear” “The Team”  ”The Year” 2. If anyone finishes their section early they may visit “The Den” and read more or watch the videos. 3. Go to and answer the questions that follow.

8 Activity 6: Persistent Reading
Directions: Read the article “Inspirational Stories Remind Us to Never Give Up.” Then answer the following questions: 1) What do all of these stories have in common? 2) Explain how one of the people in the article demonstrated persistence. “Inspirational Stories Remind Us to Never Give Up”

9 Activity 7: Venn Diagram
Directions: Flip through the following websites about the 1960’s (cars, fashion, pop culture, etc.) and listen to the music.
