2 Background Project ‘Support to People with Disabilities’ is being implemented across predominantly tribal communities in Sendhwa block, Madhya Pradesh, India from November 2013 Project is co-financed by Ministry of Economic Cooperation & Development (BMZ) and DAHW Germany. St. Augustine Social Service Society is the implementing organization of this Community Based Rehabilitation project with monitoring by GLRA India. 19th International Leprosy Congress, Beijing 18th – 21st September 2016

3 Background - Location & Demography
Sendhwa is an administrative sub-district in Madhya Pradesh in Central India 287,803 population spread across in 190 villages & one Municipality 80 % of population are Tribals living in interior hamlets Literacy rate 52 % Agriculture is the main livelihood Estimated 20,940 People with Disabilities in the district (1.51 PR) Sendhwa contributes 5,035 People with Disabilities (1.78% PR) in the district 19th International Leprosy Congress, Beijing 18th – 21st September 2016

4 Objectives To improve the quality of life of People with Disabilities and enable them to play an active role in their social and economic life with family and community To help the People with Disabilities to gain equal rights in the society and to participate equally in the community by establishing bridge between the individuals, family and the community Project attempts to remove the barriers of People with Disabilities for accessing various services provided by the Government departments and civil society organizations 19th International Leprosy Congress, Beijing 18th – 21st September 2016

5 Methods The project works in all the 5 domains of Community Based Rehabilitation Health Education Social Livelihood Empowerment Project envisioned, through inclusive effort and collective advocacy People with Disabilities including leprosy accessing entitlement's and social security benefits 19th International Leprosy Congress, Beijing 18th – 21st September 2016

6 Methods – Interventions
Baseline survey to identify and assess the real life situation of People with Disabilities Formation of inclusive Self-Help Groups & Disabled People Organizations (DPO) Vocational training Disability screening, prevention, disability certification camps Seed money support to SHGs & DPOs for income generation and Linking to National Rural Livelihood Mission Facilitation to avail social welfare schemes & Provision of assistive devices Home based self care – self esteem training to affected & their care givers Sensitization of civil body leaders involving government departments / authorities Information, education & advocacy campaigns on rights Constitution of Disabled People Federation (DPF) as an independent society for sustenance of activities 19th International Leprosy Congress, Beijing 18th – 21st September 2016

7 Findings - Baseline Survey
5135 people with disabilities living in Sendhwa 36.4 % loco motor disability 26% Multiple disability 14.5% with visual impairment 6% hearing impairment 4.4% Gr. II Leprosy disability 13.7% other disabilities 19th International Leprosy Congress, Beijing 18th – 21st September 2016

8 Findings - Socio Economic Status
73% are illiterate and 7% have not completed primary education 60.4% are male population and majority are between age group years 35% children with disability only have access to education 6% are participated in the social programs 4% only have membership in the Self-Help Group. 12% only have the National Disability Certificate 25% do not have the ration card to get their food grains 19th International Leprosy Congress, Beijing 18th – 21st September 2016

9 Results- Screening, Prevention and need based services
Prevention programme offered 33 new Leprosy cases detected and referred to PHC for treatment 316 cataract surgeries Provision of 15 hearing aids 21 leprosy affected people referred for ulcer management and Re-constructive surgery 1707 PWDS obtained disability certificate Disability Prevention & Detection camps No. of Eye Camp No. of Screen Camp No. of School Camp Attendence 16 14 8 6200 Screening camps & disability certification 19th International Leprosy Congress, Beijing 18th – 21st September 2016

10 Results – Supply of Assistive devices

12 Result - Self care & Self Esteem training for PwDs

15 Result – Formation of SHGs & DPOs
154 SHGs formed (each SHG have members), 1800 members 30 DPO's (20-35 members each) were formed with 964 members. Selected leaders among the mobilized group Initial training with DPO Leaders & Project staff completed Capacity building of DPO’s is progressing Disability People’s Federation is registered Self Help Group meeting 19th International Leprosy Congress, Beijing 18th – 21st September 2016

17 Conclusion Confidence and awareness about the rights among People with Disabilities and family members need to be increased while promoting inclusive rehabilitation Motivation of People with Disabilities to access to entitlements in the forms of Education, Scholarship, Mobility aid & appliance, Travel concession, Housing scheme, Health insurance and Disability certificate is important to provide a quality life Social mobilization in the form of SHG, DPO with the involvement of their family members enhances the access of entitlements. For Disability inclusive development, liaison with local government and affected people participation to be ensured to reach larger population in remote locations 19th International Leprosy Congress, Beijing 18th – 21st September 2016
