DEMOGRAPHIC STUCTURE OF THE PROTESTERS *Based on a qualitative study of the occupation of Barcelona during the protests. AGE Women 18-25 years old: 35’7% 26-30 years old: 13’6% 31-50 years old: 3’2% Men 18-25 years old: 26’8% 26-30 years old: 12’4% 31-50 years old: 8’3% OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE Studying: 32’4% Working: 23´9% Studying and Working: 31’6% Unemployed: 12’1% Multi generational protest * University of Salamanca

Peaceful Horizontal (intentionally no leader) Organized by assemblies Non-political Spontaneous De-unionization of different social movements

16 REACTIONS TO THE MOVEMENT
MEDIA At the beginning the most important newspapers and TV channels ignored the protests. International newspapers (The Washington Post, New York Times…) covered the new and after that Spanish newspaper begin covering the protests. (Manipulation: undermined and criminalized the movement) CENTRAL ELECTION ASSEMBLY They banned the protests because they would affect the municipal and autonomic elections of 22/05/2011. GOVERNMENT Initially they ignored it. Then they ordered for the squares to be vacated.

17 SOME OUTCOMES OF THE PROTEST
SITUATIONAL CHANGE The separatist movements in the Basque country and Catalonia sympathize with the 15-M Emergence of two new political parties PODEMOS/CIUDADANOS and the end of the two-party system. Radicalization of the wings. POLICY CHANGE Gag law (PP, 2015), LOMCE (PP, 2013)… INSTITUTIONAL CHANGE (?)

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should take a decision on including civil society in drafting the Lokpal Bill. Government should enact a comprehensive law to tackle corruption.
