Explain the impact of the Holocaust on Georgians.
Discuss President Roosevelt’s ties to Georgia including his visits to Warm Springs and his impact on the state.

3. Lend-Lease Act
The main way in which the US provided military aid to foreign countries who were considered important to our protection (allies)
Weapons, ammo, scrap metal, oil
Countries began to run out of money to buy things
The US agreed to accept land in foreign countries
Countries had to agree to come and pick up the supplies with their own ships
Why?
The US refused to sell supplies to Japan, so they took this as the US siding with the Allies and they bombed Pearl Harbor

More than 2400 people died

Bell Bomber plant in Marietta
Built B-29 bombers
Employed nearly 30,000
Shipyards at Savannah & Brunswick
Built “Liberty Ships” to transport cargo and soldiers
Employees: 16,000 at Brunswick & 19,000 at Savannah
Both helped Georgia in many ways
Transformed GA from an agricultural base to include some manufacturing
Provided jobs for many Georgians
Allowed Women and African Americans to work

US Representative for 51 years!
Known as the “Father of the two-ocean Navy”
Encouraged the Navy to expand to the West Coast prior to the attack at Pearl Harbor
Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom
Has a nuclear aircraft carrier named in his honor USS Carl Vinson
Governor of GA
US Senator for 38 years
As a member of the Armed Services & Appropriations Committees he had a lot of influence over military policy
Helped bring/maintain 15 military bases & other research facilities to GA
population & $$$$$$
Unfortunately a supporter of segregation

8. The Holocaust
The Holocaust refers to the period of time in Europe ( ) when 6 million Jewish people and 6 million other “undesirables” were systematically killed by the Nazi regime.
These people were seen as a “threat” to the “superior Germanic (Aryan) race”

10. FDR & Warm Springs
When he was 20 years old, FDR was diagnosed with polio which affects the nervous system and weakens the legs
He began to seek treatment at Warm Springs, GA in the supposedly healing springs
He spent so much time here that he built a home nicknamed “The Little White House”
Many of his policies were influenced by what he saw
