1 TALK IS: Fractions, Decimals and Percents
Models and Pictorials Warm - up Back Down Memory Lane Power point TALK IS: Fractions, Decimals and Percents Guided Practice I Have Been Converted! Independent Practice Back and Forth 1

2 Back Down Memory Lane (Warm up)
T H O 1 29 31 56 64 7 19 42 49 71 13 27 SATURN 57 73 11 25 45 54 67 5 21 32 59 69 Matho is a game, similar to bingo, however it is played with mathematics concepts. Players cover up the correct responses on their cards with a chip. The first player to call “Matho” is the winner.

3 What is a Rational Number?
A rational number is any number that can be written in fraction form. Rational numbers in decimal form are terminating or repeating. Rational numbers include whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and integers.

4 Percents Fractions TALK IS…….. Decimals There are many different ways to talk about number relationships. Rational numbers can be represented and used in a variety of equivalent forms including fractions, decimals and percents. What strategies do you use to convert numbers from one form to another?

5 Given a hundred grid How would you write the percent, fraction, and decimal that is represented by the shaded part of the model? What would do? TM 75

6 The word percent means “per hundred” So 75% means “75 of 100”.
To convert a decimal to a percent, multiply by Then place the percentage sign by the number. Let’s Take a Look Fraction Percent Equivalent decimal of 3 4 The numerator is the dividend in a fraction. The denominator is the divisor in fraction. Begin with long division. 75 shaded Total 1 0 0 X 0.7 5 5 0 0 . 7 -28 4 3 .00 2 5 -20 Simplify 75 100 Simplify 75 ÷ 25= 3 75%

7 Fifteen out of every fifty teens like to ski.
Write this verbal representation as a fraction in simplified form, then represent the fraction as a decimal and percent equivalence. Fraction Rewrite 3 as an equivalent decimal. 10 Rewrite as a Percent Multiply the decimal .30 by 100, then place the % sign after the number. The fraction 3 10 is equivalent to 15 like to ski 50 Total teens Simplify 15 50 . 3 -30 10 .0 OR Move the decimal two places to the right and add % sign. Simplify 15 ÷ 5= 3 0.3 0 30% Read as three tenths Read as three tenths or thirty hundredths. Read as thirty percent

8 Converting Rational Numbers
Rational numbers can used in a variety of equivalent forms to represent the same value. What decimal is represented here? What percent is represented here? What fraction is represented here? Allow students time for inductive reasoning to observe the conversion between percent to decimal to fraction. Ask students to describe a pattern from each transformation. = 30% = 30%

9 . 381 1000 How would you write 0.381 as a fraction? 0 3 8 1
One method is to read the number after the decimal point as a whole and give it the name of its last decimal place. 0.381 is read as: three hundred eighty-one thousandths tenths hundredths thousandths . Solution: 381 write as the numerator of the fraction Use place value 1,000 as the denominator 1000 How do you convert to a percent? 38.1%

10 One and five-tenth percent
How would you make use of what we have done so far to convert 1.5% to a fraction? Can you add to Graphic Organizer? 1.5% 15 1000 0.015 One and five-tenth percent 3 20 Converting percent to decimals or fractions Show What You Know Solution: Move the decimal point two places to the left % Students should be allowed to use any equivalent form one zero needs to be put in front of the 1 tenth 15 hundredth thousandth 1000 ÷ 5 = 3 200

11 It is estimated that 13.9% of the population of Texas was born outside the United States. Which number is not equivalent to 13.9%? A B C D 1.39 What information are we given? We are given the percent 13.9% We know percent is a……. Number referred to 100 13.9 100 13.9 % The % sign means 100 We can convert 13.9% to a decimal by… Moving the decimal point two places to the left % .139 139 1000

12 I Have Been Converted! Guided Practice
60% of the of the world’s lead comes from recycled car batteries. What fraction is that? 5 3 2. It is estimated that the mass of a human liver is 0.5% of the body’s total weight. What decimal is that? 0.005 3. Sierra shaded of her picture, as shown. What is the decimal amount of her shaded picture? What percent of her picture is shaded? 10 7 .70 70% 4. What is 8% as a decimal? 0.08

15 Writing Prompt Describe two methods you could use to write 3 as a percent. 4 Provide examples of the process of each method. Possible responses: long division, common fraction, using a proportion.
