Challenges of Agriculture and Agro Industries Development
Climate change particularly drought and flooding are hindering agricultural performance, agro industries development and food security. Low innovation and low investment in research and development in the sector Funding challenges Low yield / productivity Diseases and pests Disjointed value chains High cost of production affecting competiveness on the in regional and international markets Low capacity utilization affecting the absorption of agricultural produce by the agro industries

Support needed by the Agriculture and Agro Industries Sector
Development of the necessary infrastructure including road and irrigation infrastructure Capacity building to improve on productivity , new technology, crafting of value chain based strategies Development and use of best practices Practicing climate smart agriculture Development of information systems Value chain development Funding Disease and pest control Minimization of post harvest losses

COMMAND AGRICULTURE In 2016 the Government of Zimbabwe embarked on a 3 year special program on maize production The purpose of the program was to curb importation of maize which was draining the country of foreign currency It is being implemented under the Food and Nutrition pillar of ZIM ASSET The program targeted a yield of MT from hectares of land It is private sector funded

Farmers would pay back after harvesting It involved all stakeholders both Government and the private sector players along the value chain i.e input suppliers ( seed, fertiliser, chemical and packaging ), transport operators, Grain Marketing Board, Preliminary assessments have revealed that the country will produce in excess of the targeted MT which is way about the country’s requirement which stands at MT needed for both human and livestock consumption. The program is now being rolled out to include other crops like wheat and soya beans and also livestock production

An implementation structure was set comprising a Committee of Senior Officials at Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Relevant Parastatals, sub committee to deal with specific areas The program was quite inclusive with women and small holder farmers also participating

Conclusion Given the success scored to date on the command agriculture Zimbabwe is on course to achieve SDG 1, End poverty in all its forms everywhere, SDG 2 End Hunger, achieve food and security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture, SDG 8 and SDG 9
