Agenda Where we were in 2013 Where we are now The way ahead
Sense of belonging Student achievement Youth Unemployment Food Insecurity Early Childhood Development The way ahead
3
Here’s where we started!
In 2013, we produced a “summarized report” that celebrates and plans for the future of children, youth and families in HPE 3 categories of indicators
4
Sense of Belonging Contributes to individual & community well-being, and physical and mental health Somewhat lower than in 2010 Still above provincial average, but gap is closing
5
Student Achievement EQAO scores can be interpreted meaningfully only in the context of the community that produced them Information about local student achievement has proven essential for effective system- improvement planning Our report looked at only 2 EQAO levels: Grade 9 Applied Math Grade 10 Literacy
6
Student Achievement: Grade 9 Applied Math
Generally at or above provincial averages More or less consistent
7
Student Achievement: OSSLT
Consistently below provincial averages Unlike Ontario, a clear trend downward Gap is increasing
8
Student Achievement: Grade 3 Reading
Consistently below provincial averages Unlike Ontario, not a clear trend upward
9
Student Achievement: Grade 3 Writing
Consistently below provincial averages No clear trend
10
Student Achievement: Grade 3 Math
Consistently below provincial averages Downward trend: now only ½
11
Youth (15 – 24) Unemployment
In 2012, HPE was below the provincial rate In 2014, almost twice as high - more than 1 in 4 Linked to concerns for the young people and the long-term community welfare
12
Early Childhood Development
More than 1/3 of young children in HPE are developmentally at risk Consistently below Ontario average
13
Food Insecurity 11.5% of all HPE households experienced food insecurity in 2014 An increase of 600 people since 2012 Still one of the highest rates of food insecurity in Ontario Almost 18,500 people in HPE
14
Food Insecurity
15
Data Matter! These data provide just a few “snap shots” of the children and youth in HPE There are so many more indicators that we could look at to get a clearer picture
16
Data Matter! With data from various sources, the CYSN has a common ground to work together to build and strengthen our community We can celebrate our successes We can see what we need to work on We can shape the future and wellbeing of the children, youth and well-being in HPE informed by solid evidence
17
Data Matter! Research indicates that decisions based on the conscientious and explicit use of the best available evidence from a variety of sources (e.g. experiential, organizational and scientific evidence) yield the best outcomes. Data can inspire progress and galvanize change. To know where we need to go, we need to know what we’ve achieved – where progress is being made and where major challenges remain. - CYSN adopted strategy
