Physics and Mathematics Behind DSLR Cameras
Morgan Kelly
2
Intro Many people believe that photography is just a simple click of the button and anyone can be a photographer This is not the case Art form & way of expression Mathematical equation and physics structure ISO F-stop/aperture Shutter speed Physical camera body and the way it behaves lenses Prisms mechanisms
3
F stop/Aperture controls the depth of field
how open or closed the hole is the higher the f-stop, the deeper the depth of field and the more of the image that’s going to be in focus the smaller the number, the shallower the depth of field, and less of the image is going to be in focus
8
ISO stands for International Standard Organization
standardized industry scale for measuring one’s sensitivity to light allows not only more or less light into the camera and but also adjusts the overall exposure of the image the higher the the more grain is added to the image
10
Shutter speed controls the speed in which the shutter opens and closes
a longer shutter speed enables the shutter to stay open for a longer period of time and allows more light a shorter shutter speed allows the photographer to capture fast moving objects or subjects without the risk of motion blur and allows only a small amount of light
14
The Physics in the Camera
first component is the lens in which the light enters the body of the camera hits the reflex mirror reflecting off the reflex mirror and into the pentaprism and bounces a few more times into the view finder the image sensor is located in the back side of the body and is being protected from any light hitting it at this point due to the reflex mirror and the shutter shutter is pressed, the reflex mirror folds up and the shutter opens up and allows the light to enter the camera through the shutter curtain, and onto the sensor and allows the image to be formed
16
Conclusion Photography by nature is mathematical and physics based art form Photographers themselves are scientists and mathematicians lets not simplify photography as a complicated art form that it is, let’s encourage the knowledge and understanding of mathematics and physics that goes into good image making
