We hope while here at Camp Discover, the joy of reading you’ll uncover. You can be a world traveler, or learn how to cook. Be a famous detective, sail the seas with Captain Hook. History Began in the summer of 1997… Happy 20th Anniversary, CAMP DISCOVER! Created because of a need for summer reading practice in order to maintain skills and strategies. Purpose: To motivate reluctant readers through science and discovery; to provide reading practice Candidates: Title I Reading, Learning Support (reading IEP goals), and ESL program participants in grades K, 1, and 2 Site #1 (northern schools): Kratzer (Ironton, Kernsville, Kratzer, Schnecksville) Site #2 (southern schools): Jaindl (Cetronia, Fogelsville, Jaindl, Parkway Manor) Andrea

staff 2 Camp each site – one reading specialist & one learning support teacher Kratzer: Ms. Nikki Gelfo & Mrs. Lori Schellhamer Jaindl: Mrs. Andrea Marzano & Mrs. Rebecca Miltenberger 13 or more Camp Counselors (instructors) per site All are Parkland employees Trained instructors each site every day during the Camp hours each site or on call during the Camp hours Children are always supervised. Dates & hours July 10 – 11 – 12 – 13, 2017 (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) July 17 – 18 – 19 – 20, 2017 (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) Camp hours are 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM each day. We encourage all Campers to make every effort to attend each session. Attendance is imperative to assure continuity for each student. Allentown YMCA’s child care program, Y-Care, will be offered at each site on the days that Camp Discover is in session. Y-Care hours begin before Camp at 7:00 AM until Camp begins at 8:30 AM. Y-Care hours then continue at the end of Camp at 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM. Y-Care participation is optional and will require an additional fee that is charged by the YMCA. Nikki

Reread the take home book from the previous day to staff Shared Reading Grade level text used to build knowledge through content-rich informational text Individualized Reading Themed books in 5 different text complexity bands Enable students to become subject matter experts Morning snack Students must bring their own healthy snack each day. A day at camp discover Recess Lunch Informational Writing
Students must bring their own healthy lunch each day. Informational Writing Students will use the information they have learned from their individualized reading to create their own book! STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, & Math) Activities Special Activities Parkland Public Library Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Program Prepare for dismissal The children will take home a book each night to read to parents and then return the next day. Dismissal of students at 3:00 PM Becky

Parent information Complete the Camp Discover Application Form
Check if you are interested in having your child attend the Y-Care day care program before and/or after Camp. More information will be sent to you at a later date. Complete the Personal Data Form. Be sure to list all food and/or medical allergies on this form. The Camp Discover nurse will be in contact with you to discuss the medical needs of your child while at Camp. $35 fee for consumable materials and supplies. Cash or check made payable to Parkland School District. Please see one of the Coordinators if circumstances prevent you from providing this fee. Return Application Form, Personal Data Form & $35 fee by Wed., April 19, 2017. Lori

Parent information Provide a healthy snack and lunch for your child each day. Be on time for drop off and pick up. You are invited to bring your child into the school on the first day of Camp. Each site has a drop off and pick up procedure that we ask parents to follow each day. Read with your child each night. Help your child to remember to return his/her bag to Camp each day. Write a note to the Coordinators if plans change for pick up. Provide a phone # for the person doing pick up. Join us at the end of the last day of Camp for a special activity with parents! Lori Special activity for end of Camp – You will be able to help your child select books to keep.

Camp Discover is the one, in summer, in summer. For reading and for having fun, come with us today! We’re going to read and write, experiment and play. Learning is for everyone the Camp Discover way! Hooray! Hooray! Hooray, Camp Discover!! Nikki will sing this song for all to sing along.
