PRECOATING GUIDELINES
PURPOSE: TO FORM A UNIFORM, THIN CAKE THAT PROTECTS THE MEDIA FROM BLINDING AND GIVES IMMEDIATE CLARITY AMOUNT OF FILTER AID FOR PRECOATING = 0.1 TO 0.2 POUNDS/SQ. FT. OF FILTER AREA PRECOAT RATE = 0.5 TO 1.5 GPM/SQ. FT. OF FILTER AREA PROCESS SOLIDS PRECOATING REQUIRES 0.1 TO 0.2 PERCENT SOLIDS CONCENTRATION SCHOONOVER, INC. 36

TROUBLE SHOOTING THE SPARKLER HORIZONTAL PLATE FILTER SCAVENGER TYPE SCHOONOVER, INC. 43
44
A LACK OF FILTRATE CLARITY IS GENERALLY DUE TO LEAKING SEALS
THE ONLY SEALS EFFECTING CLARITY ARE: THE OUTLET GASKET THE OUTER RING AND CENTER HUB OF EACH PLATE LEAKS AT THESE SEALS ARE DUE TO ERRORS IN FILTER ASSEMBLY, IMPROPER MEDIA PLACEMENT, OR DAMAGED FILTER COMPONENTS. OTHER POSSIBLE CAUSES: WRONG FILTER AID WRONG MEDIA (FILTER PAPER) WRONG TIE ROD TORQUE WRONG PROCEDURES LEAKS AT THE COVER GASKET OR TIE ROD SOCKET GASKETS DO NOT EFFECT CLARITY SCHOONOVER, INC. 44
45
IF FILTRATE DOES NOT CLEAR IN 10 - 15 MINUTES
CORRECTIVE ACTION CHECK OUTLET GASKET AT EACH FILTER CHANGE. CHECK THAT MEDIA IS PLACED PROPERLY ON EACH PLATE. CHECK CONDITION OF FILTER PLATES, SCREENS AND CUPS. CHECK TIE ROD TORQUE. CHECK THAT THE BAFFLE ON THE PLATES FACES THE INLET NOZZLE CHECK PROCEDURES FAST FILLING OF THE FILTER TANK CAN TEAR FILTER PAPER. FAST FILLING CAN BLIND UPPER FILTER PLATES AND RESULT IN POOR PRECOATING. SLOW PRECOATING CAN PRODUCE POOR PRECOAT DISTRIBUTION. IF FILTRATE DOES NOT CLEAR IN MINUTES STOP YOU HAVE A PROBLEM ! SCHOONOVER, INC. 45
46

CAPACITIES and LIMITS SURFACE AREA (for 33” plates) NO. of PLATES X 5.62 SQ FT / PLATE = FILTRATION AREA 19 PLATES X 5.62 SQ FT / PLATE = SQ FT SURFACE AREA IS A FACTOR IN DETERMINING FLOW RATE - EXAMPLE: IF A PROCESS ALLOWS FILTERING AT 0.5 GPM /SQ FT, THE MAXIMUM FLOW RATE IS 0.5 GPM / SQ FT X SQ FT =53 GPM OTHER FACTORS THAT CONTROL FLOW RATE ARE: VISCOSITY, CAKE RESISTANCE AND PRESSURE. THE SPARKLER HORIZONTAL PLATE FILTER REVERSE FLOW SIMPLER PIPING
SIMPLER OPERATION LESS VALVE MANIPULATION NO HEEL FULLY CONTAINED CAKE CLEAN TANK LESS BLOWDOWN GAS The reversed filtration flow path results in simpler piping installations, simpler operation and elimination of a heel at the end of the filtration cycle. This presentation contrasts the design and operation of the Reverse Flow Filter with the scavenger type horizontal plate filter. SCHOONOVER, INC. 52
53
SCAVENGER FILTER REVERSE FLOW FILTER
The Reverse Flow Filter and Horizontal Plate Scavenger Type Filter of the same capacity have similar size tanks and shape. But there are distinct piping differences. Inlet and outlet are reversed and there is no scavenger outlet on the Reverse Flow Filter. SCHOONOVER, INC. 53
54
SCAVENGER FILTER REVERSE FLOW FILTER
In the horizontal plate scavenger filter, the feed is into the tank, usually through a port located on the side of the filter tank. FEED SCHOONOVER, INC. 54
55
SCAVENGER FILTER REVERSE FLOW FILTER
The filtrate exits the scavenger plate filter through two outlets, the main outlet and the scavenger outlet. Successful operation requires proper sequencing of the outlet and scavenger outlets during startup and shut down of the filtration cycle. FEED FILTRATE SCHOONOVER, INC. 55
56
SCAVENGER FILTER REVERSE FLOW FILTER
The feed enters the Reverse Flow Filter through the center column ilet on the bottom of the filter tank. FEED FILTRATE FEED SCHOONOVER, INC. 56
57
SCAVENGER FILTER REVERSE FLOW FILTER
The filtrate exits the outlet nozzle at the bottom of the filter tank. There is only one outlet. One important difference to note is the location of the inlet and outlet pressure gauges. On the Reverse Flow Filter, the inlet pressure is measured on the inlet piping at the bottom of the tank. The pressure gauge on the tank cover measures the outlet pressure.
