2 CV6635 - Civil3D Techniques for Modelling Complex Urban Realm
Ian Philpott Development Infrastructure Engineer

3 Class summary Civil3D techniques for modelling complex urban realm, SUDS, parking & loading, piazzas and multiple variations. Aggregate and visualise in Navisworks for interfacing

4 Key learning objectives
At the end of this class, you will be able to: Set-up data model structures for large or complex projects Use offset alignments and conditional subassemblies to model complex footways speeding up rebuild times Use dynamic tin surfaces to model urban realm formations and utilities How to split up data for speed and merge data for presentation

5 About the Speaker

6 18yrs Experience with both Consultants and Contractors
Joined Scott Wilson in 2001, which was bought by URS and now part of AECOM. Specialises in the design and 3D modelling of complex development infrastructure projects Actively involved in fee earning projects day to day Chair of URS’ Civil3D Steering Group within EMI Region Passionate about BIM processes

7 North West Cambridge – University of Cambridge
Project Cost - £1.1bn 150Ha site Phase 1 under construction URS – Multidisciplinary Engineer AECOM – Masterplan / Landscape / Sustainability

8 Brent Cross Cricklewood
Project Cost - £4bn Major urban regeneration New town centre including 7,500 homes, 27,000 jobs, three re-built schools, new parks and community facilities, a new train station, and major road and public transport improvements.

9 Introduction

10 Data Structure

11 Critical Issues Good data structure is essential Make regular backups Control data from others Data splitting Object naming

12 Object Naming – Why is it so important?
Model Clarity Data Extraction Navisworks Search Sets

13 Urban Realm with Corridors

14 Mini Swales & Rain Gardens
Curvy Layby Mini Swales & Rain Gardens

15 Looks easy doesn’t, that’s what I thought. Umm NO it’s not.
Curvy Layby Looks easy doesn’t, that’s what I thought. Umm NO it’s not. What are the issues Alignment can’t be done with automatic curve widening Level differentials Kerb transitions Assembly insertion overlaps (bow ties) How do we make it work?

16 LIVE DEMO

17 Mini Swales and Rain Gardens
SUDS a mandatory part of urban design What are the issues Limited space Start / stop features Varying widths and depths Treatment at end of the swale Getting a formation model

18 LIVE DEMO

19 Utilities Biggest co-ordination challenge nightmare Get it right it 2D, standard depth for 3D then sort the issues Use pasted surface or dynamic TIN to show min. cover

20 Utilities Get your object naming right. You’ll need it later Use your Civil3D file direct in Navis for quick refreshes Master Navis clash detection

21 LIVE DEMO

22 Urban Realm without Corridors

23 Design Piazzas to Control Overland Flow

24 LIVE DEMO

25 Bring it Back Together

26 Bring it Back Together – With Navisworks
Start with the basics – add some files and do a visual inspection Most valuable tool I’ve have added to my toolbox for years Master search sets – now you will see I’ve harped on and on about object naming Take the model and show your Clients and Stakeholders. It really helps

29 Summary

30 Key Points I Getting Started Urban Realm Corridors
Take 5 and think about before you start. Develop a good data management structure Divide and conquer Get your object naming right. It pays dividends later Urban Realm Corridors Temporary corridors are your friend when setting level on offset alignments Make use of conditional sub-assemblies The model may not be perfect, a good representation is sometimes the best we can do

31 Urban Realm without Corridors
Key Points II Utilities Just about the most complex task we deal with in the urban environment There will be clashes the first time out Make a dynamic link between Civil3D data and Navis model Urban Realm without Corridors Think about overland flows Use dynamic TIN surface make your formation dynamic to the top just like a corridor

32 Key Points III Bring it Together
Teach yourself the basics, its easy then get some training to make the most of the advanced features Use your object naming to automate appearance control and search sets Master clash detection Take your model and show your Clients. It really helps Make use of point clouds

35 Via the Survey Stations, email or mobile device
Session Feedback Via the Survey Stations, or mobile device AU 2015 passes given out each day! Best to do it right after the session Instructors see results in real-time We really value your feedback – after a class is completed you will receive an with a link to complete a class survey… You can respond to that on your computer, mobile device or via the Survey stations that are all over the place here at AU. The instructors compete for the prestigious Instructor Awards – and we also use your input on classes to determine the classes for next year’s AU. And each day we will give away two free passes to next year’s AU…
