GEOGRAPHY is a transcontinental country largely situated in the northwest of South America,with territories in Central America. Colombia shares a border to the northwest with Panama, to the east with Venezuela and Brazil and to the south with Ecuador and Peru.

POLITICS The current president of the Republic of Colombia is Juan Manuel Santos, who took office on 7 August 2010.

GOVERNMENT Government is divided into three branches:
1) the executive branch followed by the Vice President and the Council of Ministers. 2) the legislative branch represented by the Congress. 3) the judicial branch is headed by four high courts.

SEVERAL KEY DATES "The War of the Thousand Days" is fought between Liberals and Conservatives. 120,000 people die. Panama breaks away and becomes independent. Civil war. Between 250,00 and 300,000 people die. 1984- The campaign against drug traficking is strengthened after the assassination of the justice minister. 1989- USA supports Colombia in war against drugs. 1991- A new constitution is put into action. 1993- Pablo Escobar, leader of the drug-cartel in Medellín is shot by police.

WHY COMOLBIA ? Colombia is the happiest country in the world according to the 2013 and the 2014 Barometer of Happiness and Hope. (Source: Colombia Reports, 2014) Colombia is the second most biodiverse country in the world, after only Brazil which is 10 times its size. It is one of only 17 “megadiverse” countries in the world. (Source: World Resources Institute, 2013) Colombia is the 53rd largest export economy in the world and the 57th most complex economy according to the Economic Complexity Index (ECI) Colombia is the only country in South America that has access to both the Pacific and Caribbean ocean.
