Alcohol and you!
5
By the end of the lesson you will…
Know… …the effects of alcohol Understand… …some of the dangers of alcohol Be able to… …avoid problems with alcohol and get help if you need to
6
According to research, who drinks more – girls or boys?
7

9
What is the recommended number of units of alcohol per day for women?
1-2 2-3 3-4 5-6 2-3
10
Choices, choices… On your sheet, you have 16 statements.
Colour-code them to show whether they are… Reasons why someone would choose to drink. Reasons why someone would choose NOT to drink. And the answers…
11
Why might someone decide to drink?
They like the taste Special occasions Makes them feel they belong There is alcohol available Boredom Stress It will make them look/feel attractive Gives them confidence Why might someone decide not to drink? People rely on them People trust them They want to stay in control They’re in a vulnerable situation Lack of money The taste Effects on school or work Against their beliefs
12
Choose one of the following two activities…
Write down how many units you think each of the drinks on your sheet contain. On your sheet you have a range of different drinks. Arrange them in order of how strong you think they are.
13
3.5 units 2 units 1 unit 2 units 2 units 1 unit
14
What does that MEAN? What was the recommended daily intake of alcohol for men and women? 3-4 units for men 2-3 units for women So how many of each drink could you have every day? Write it on your sheet. Having any number of drinks every day is unhealthy, as it’s habit-forming and can lead to problem-drinking. Equally, ‘saving’ all of your units up for the weekend and having them all at once is extremely unhealthy, and is referred to as binge drinking.
15
Binge drinking Binge Drinking is when you drink a huge amount of alcohol at the same time. You may not do it often, but it is a big problem, particularly among young people… Watch this clip And this one… Having a few drinks can be good fun: You remember what you got up to You are in control of what you are doing so nobody can take advantage of you You are not sick on yourself, your friends, or your parents’ carpet You don’t end up in hospital because you need to have your stomach pumped or you fell under a car
16
What effects does alcohol have on the body
What effects does alcohol have on the body? Choose one of the following: Draw what you think each of the parts of the body would look like if they were affected as shown on the sheet. You have a blank outline of the body to work on. Label your blank body outline to show what consequences each of these things might have. For example, dilating blood vessels in the eyes might lead to a car accident or simply falling over.
17
And finally… In your workbook, write down the one most important thing that you think people should know about alcohol. Where can you go for help? Your GP Teen Health Stop Talk to Frank
