Realizing that education is paramount to achieving an ever higher standard of care, the PVH and MCR Foundation leverages philanthropy as a bridge between higher expectations and constrained resources. PVH Foundation established 1976 Added MCR in 2008 Partnered with CHMG for more than a decade MCR Foundation 2008 Merged regional efforts to become PVH and MCR Foundation 2012 UCHealth formed in 2012 Scholarships established late 1970’s – originally solely supporting nurses According to the Chief Nursing Officer at PVH when scholarships were initiated, the first years of the scholarship program through the foundation were entirely focused on nurse education. “For patients to receive the care they need, nurses are the priority.” - Sharyn Salmen Introduce ourselves and our organization (UCHealth includes many hospitals and regions, we are NoCo with PVH/MCR) Jane’s clinical expertise and Magnet designation work highlighting the high quality of nurses in our region – never worked for an org. with such a culture or availability of nurse education support Anna’s description of 3 philanthropic arms of UCHealth, PVH and MCR limited to NoCo Here’s a little bit about who we are in hopes that any similarities will help you glean more from our presentation

5 Professional Nursing Practice Model
The mission of the Poudre Valley Hospital and Medical Center of the Rockies Foundation is to support its affiliated hospitals and clinics in the delivery and advancement of world-class healthcare in northern Colorado. The foundation realizes its mission through the development and stewardship of philanthropic resources in support of the hospitals’ mission and strategic goals. Through philanthropy we: Bridge gaps not covered by insurance Accelerate advances Give opportunities to express gratitude Current State Anna = System status and foundation regionality Jane = Magnet status and requirements, credential demands, increased ed level at hire, etc. UCHealth – northern region PVH and MCR Foundation Nurse education/credential demands Mention scholarship program, we’ll get to the details of the endowment and the UCHealth North Nursing Scholarship a little later

6 By 2020, the Institute of Medicine charges that 80% of practicing nurses must have their bachelors degree as a minimum education level Current State At least 72% of practicing nurses at PVH and 64% at MCR have BSN or above 8+% jump in one year More than 10% increase over previous 4-5 years On track to achieve the 80% BSN by 2020 Gaps lie in current and long-term employees as new hires already meet standard In the meantime… Magnet Recognition by the American Nurse Credentialing Center PVH – four-time designee since 2000, never lapsed MCR – two-time designee since 2008, never lapsed Jane make comparison to other professionals required Masters or above as grounding of the issue Jane to mention American Nursing Association and other national nursing associations supporting this charge

The Richard G. Titus Endowed Scholarship was established in 2013 with a bequest gift in gratitude for the outstanding care that Dr. Titus received during his life, to honor those employees engaged in the health profession, and to further his lifelong commitment to education. Richard G. Titus Scholarship for Nurse Leaders RN to BSN through University of Colorado Denver $77,000 awarded in 2014/15 Total remaining for current use $____ Richard G. Titus Endowed Scholarship Priority placed on employees pursuing a career path in nursing or research $480,000 endowed $4000 awarded in 2014, $10,000 awarded in 2015

Awareness Kick-off activities PTO Drive Raising principal to start new fund Community Support Corporate sponsor pitched in The pay-out! $15,000+ raised in the first year Awarded 5 scholarships, $6500 year 1 $10,000 awarded year 2 *New Professional Development Empowerment in Action Nurses Week Activities In 2013, nursing committees collaborated to host a walk to raise money and awareness for a new scholarship to help practicing nurses achieve their BSN PTO drive With the walk providing momentum at the kick-off of the 2013 Employee Campaign, the campaign had a push for PTO donation to help seed the fund Initial goal: 160 hours of PTO (estimating PTO valued at approx. $25 per hour) – received more than goal with more than 150 donors first year Nurse Leadership Advocacy and Donations Hospital-wide efforts and hospital match Community gifts – Alphagraphics wanted to allocate part of their annual sponsorship to support nurses and in a way that was current and relevant – they chose this fund! The pay-out! $15,000 raised in the first year We immediately awarded 5 scholarships totaling $6500 in May or 2014
