2 Learning Targets I know the difference between grey and black water
I know what materials pipes can be made out of. I know what water sources are available for a modern house

3 Why Do I need to know this?
Plumbing can be relatively basic and simple. Just as with anything it can become more complex and advanced. (heating and cooling systems) However most plumbing jobs can be done by the home owner. What does this mean: You can save yourself big $$$$$$$$$$

4 Example Mr. McMullen’s story
My cost if I had done the work about: $60-80 The Plumbers cost: $430ish Why so much? Plumber has needs: Insurance Labor Parts Gas Vehicle costs equipment

6 What do all Modern Houses Need?
Running Water. Hot Cold Waste Disposal Grey Water Black Water

7 Grey water: Is a term for water that has no human waste in it.
Examples: washing machines, sinks, shower Black water: Is a term for water that does contain human waste: Examples: toilet, urinal.

8 Basics Running water and waste removal is the most basic water needs a modern house must have. Additional water options (more than is listed) Hot water heat (boiler) Heated floors (boiler) Back up systems (sump pump powered by water)

10 Lets explore a houses plumbing system.
How does the plumbing in a house work? Most things are delivered or carried away by pipe. Pipe is not a new invention. Romans had metal piping in their buildings that carried waste and water. However all Roman piping was lead…….which some theories believe helped contribute to its demise….who knows for sure? The basic History of pipe Clay-Lead-cast & copper and other soft metals- PVC and other synthetics Probably at least half of a new houses plumbing if not all will have plastic pipe……more on plastics later..

17 Where does the water come from?
If you live on a main road or close to the city. You have a municipal water. Municipal water: Water that is provided by the local government. Water is chemically treated to prevent spoilage and tooth decay. Chlorine Fluoride You are charged for water used. Workers collect meter readings on the house that state how mush water is used

20 County Folk Water If you do not have city water available
You have a well 2 types of wells Shallow well: Less than 30 ft deep (can be made by yourself) Deep Well: greater than 30 ft. more likely 100’s of feet Water is free just have to pay for the well to be dug and electricity to pump it. Is not chemically treated. Can be a good or bad thing.

25 Pro’s and cons for water
Municipal Water: Pro’s: No rust, always the same, Constantly monitored for cleanliness, almost never loose water even in storms Con’s: Chemically treated. If paranoid about terrorist threat….always a chance. Well water. Pro’s: Can be relatively cheap, clean water. Con’s: can be contaminated, rust issues (hard water)

26 Assignment for today 2 things to do.
Take out the drawing of your dream house that we have been working on and add plumbing features such as well, city water, sinks, tubs, toilets, etc. Then hold on to the drawings. Make a list of all plumbing fixtures in your current house and list what they are. Include wells, and city water connections. Then below your list draw a diagram of what you typically use in a day for water. Be sure to label and draw diagrams. Turn in when finished. and fixtures my example is this.
