1 Grade 6 Honors Fractions, Decimals, Percent, Ratios
Ms. Nixon-Williams Grade 6 Honors Fractions, Decimals, Percent, Ratios

2 Percent and Decimals and Fractions 1
The word Percent means “hundredths” or “divided by 100.” % is the symbol used to show percent 39% means 39 divided by 100 or

3 Percent, Decimals, Fractions, Ratios 2
To convert a percentage to a decimal remove the percent sign and divide by 100. (You can also get the same results by moving the decimal point two places to the left) 16.2%  ÷ 100 = 25%  25 ÷ 100 =

4 Percent, Decimals, Fractions, Ratios 3
To convert a decimal to a percentage multiply the decimal by 100 and add the decimal point (You can get the same result by moving the decimal point two places to the right) Examples:  x 100= 6.5 % 3.75  x 100 = 375%

5 Percent, Decimals, Fractions, Ratios 4
To find a percentage of a number  multiply the number by the decimal equivalent of the percent. Example: What is 25% of 80? (0.25)x(80) = 20  20 is 25% of 80

6 Percent, Decimals, Fractions, Ratios 5
To find what percent one number is of another, divide the number by the total and convert the answer to the equivalent percent. Example: 3 is what percent of 4? 3 ÷ 4 =  .75 x 100 = 75% Answer: 3 is 75% of 4 Example #2: 8 is what percent of 37? 8 ÷ 37 =  x 100 =  round to 21.62% Answer: 8 is 21.62% of 37

7 Percent, Decimals, Fractions, Ratios 6
To find a number that is a certain percentage of another number, divide the number by the decimal equivalent of the percentage. Example: 8 is 40% of what number 8 ÷ .40 = 20 Answer: 8 is 40% of 20 Example2: 17 is 34% of what number? 17 ÷ .34 = 50 17 is 34% of 50

8 Percent, Decimals, Fractions, Ratios 7
To change a fraction into a percentage, divide to find its decimal equivalent and then multiply the decimal by 100. 18 /35 = ÷ 35 =  x 100 =  round Answer 18/35 =51.43%

9 Comparing Fractions, Decimals and Percent
Part A - FROM a Fraction Part 1A - Fraction to a Decimal Examples 1.) Convert the fraction 3/8 to a DECIMAL Divide: 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375 2.) Convert 4/9 to a DECIMAL 4 ÷ 9 = … 0.44 4/9 Notice that these diagrams have the same amount shaded in, so 4/9 is the same as 0.44… x x x x x

10 Part 2A- Decimal to a Percent
To convert a decimal to a percent Mult
