Sport Science Hitting a homerun with teaching Physical Science!
Nancy Wall and Kerri Deal HCCMS
2
Energizers Students loved them! Helped for reviewing topics
Let you know how many students were grasping the concepts Gave students an opportunity to move
3
Students energizing!
4
Uses and results of energizers
Used to review vocabulary, content Increased retention, Higher student engagement Increased accessibility for students
5
Energizers to model Used in lesson on particle movement
Students asked to jog based on state of matter Starting as water at -10 C Moving through heating curve to boiling then condensing
6
Lessons Lesson 1- We each used energizers to review concepts.
Lesson 2- We used with science club on club day-Taught/reviewed Newton’s Laws of motion, gravity, momentum, air resistance, friction. 7th and 8th grade students worked in teams of 4-5. They loved the Olympics-Brains and Brawn events-Q-tip Javelin, wiffle ball throw, ping pong obstacle course, feather run relay, ping pong shot.
7
Science Club Meets once a month 45 minutes
1 session to go over concepts involved in the different activities 1 session to practice in their groups and devise their strategies 2 sessions for Olympics Closing Session- Awards and review of concepts
8
Obstacle Course
9
Q-Tip Javelin

Super fast team work!
11
Wiffle Ball Throw
12
Getting to ready for Feather Run Relay
13
Ping Pong Shot

Student Feedback When asked we asked the students in Science Club, “How many of you enjoyed doing the Olympics?”-19 out of 21 quickly raised their hands. When asked, “How many of you would like to do this in 8th grade science classes?” all raised their hands. When asked what they enjoyed most some responded, “running in the halls!”

Presented at the Share The Wealth Conference
Great Opportunity to share with other teachers- mostly Physical Education teachers- the physical science behind things. Had teachers in stations-wiffle ball throw, q-tip javelin, ball bounce, golf- doing different activities while sharing the physical science concepts and ended with an energizer review to test their knowledge. Enjoyed a lesson that incorporated simple machines. Attended other sessions that gave ideas for incorporating other movement activities and technology.

A Must for all Physical Science and PE Teachers!
This workshop has really benefitted my students and fellow teachers! Would love to see it offered again, so more could get on board!
