15 Task 3 Source A A lady remembers growing up in the 1880s in book many years later We modernised it with an electric light and telephone. The house when rebuilt contained a large basement, three sitting rooms, a lounge-hall and seven bedrooms. All the rooms were warmed by a coal fire. There were nursery meals to be carried up and down, hot water to the bedrooms. We had a nanny, a palour maid, a housemaid and a cook. Later we had a manservant for £70 a year. The cook earned £28, the nurse £40. we spent about 12 shillings (60p) each week on a food and cleaning materials. We bought coal at 15 shillings (75p) a ton). 1.Evaluate the usefulness of the source as evidence of housing in Britain in the late 19th century?

16 Model Answer The source is quite useful for a few reasons but has drawbacks. The source is a primary source because it comes from the memory of a lady who experienced the events that we are studying. She gives quite a few details of her life in a middle class home making the description useful. However, she only describes a nice middle class home. The source also fails to mentionthe more common slum housing.
