Inflections and Intensity
How we say something tells a lot about what we think of it. It’s the inflection we use to vary the meaning of what’s being expressed. In ASL, inflected can be done using non-manual indicators to demonstrate tone, depth or the degree of intensity. It’s used to modify the meaning of a sign based on the situation. For example if you wanted to say “ I’m very happy I’ve passed my driver’s test.” Skilled ASL signer would sign “ I HAPPY I PASSED MY DRIVER TEST” By adding inflection to sign Happy means very happy. 6 ASL Modifiers Intensity facial expression Hold the initial handshape slightly longer Slightly exaggerated the movement of a sign Hold the ending handshape slightly longer Tilt your head back slightly and then nod your head using a single, short, quick movement Stick the elbow slightly further out at the beginning of the sign and bring the elbow down sharply during the sign you want to enunciate SLOW then you can add by doing the noun sign slow. Car drove slow, car movement with CL 3 would be slow. Or if teacher talked really slow then you sign the sentence as teacher would be talking, slow.

Classifier’s NOTES Classifiers are the signs that give descriptive traits to our person, place, or thing otherwise known as NOUNS. They are used to describe the movement, location, and appearance of our subject. Some are iconic, meaning you can tell what they mean even if you don’t know ASL. The pattern is NOUN FIRST THEN CLASSIFER! MOTION CL: Can use body and DON’T MOVE but stay in place show the movement.
