Today’s Agenda Chelsea 10:15-10:20
*Welcome and Get to Know You, Norms, Learning Target, Discuss Problem Solving Block, PSB in Action, Reflection*
5
Picture Share Chelsea 10:15-10:20
Have participants find their most fun photo from their summer and show it to a partner. Allow participants to share their memory from the photo.
6
PLC Norms Be honest. Be respectful. Dare to disagree.
Celebrate successes. Trust the process. Participate in meaningful discourse. Chelsea 10:15-10:20

Learning Targets Today I will explore what problem solving looks like in Northwest ISD. So I can effectively facilitate a safe environment with productive struggle. I am successful when I know how to guide my students to be willing and able to challenge themselves and each other during PSB. Chelsea 10:15-10:20 Discuss learning targets and framing the lesson

Problem Solving Block Structure
Meredith 10:20-10:25 PSB may not look exactly like this each day, especially depending on the complexity of the problem you are using with students. There will be times that you get to the Opening-really building understanding of the problem, Solo Time, and some work time. The next day may be the time you come back to the same task, have students finish work time and then have your student-led closing. The key is quality over quantity. We would rather you have gone through the entire problem solving process well with 2-3 problems in a week than to have skimmed over 5 problems. Clarify the use of when to use the Step Ahead as PSB.

A Look at PSB in Moodle Moodle.nisdtx.org
NISD Staff > Curriculum > Elementary Curriculum > Math Curriculum > Select grade Enrollment Key - Curriculum13 Meredith 10:25- 10:35 Have teachers explore their PSB for Module 1. Reinforce that they will NOT use all problems, they choose what works for their students. T&T - What do you notice about the types of problems?
10
Various Ways PSB Can Look
Productive Struggle-It’s okay to struggle! Notebooks PAL/Group Work/Independent Butcher Paper Labels/Print Outs Electronic (Google DOcs, Doceri, Educreations, 30Hands) Gallery Walks Feedback (Teacher to student, student to student, student to teacher) Teacher Led or Student Led Chelsea 10:35-10:40 Talk specifically about the importance of journaling. K-2 should be writing explanations while 3-5 writes justifications. Question: What are other ideas that could be done during problem solving to keep it engaging for our students?
11
Problem Solving Block Looks Like Sounds Like 10:40-10:50
Work as a table group to create a table of what PSB looks and sounds like. Once people have completed their charts, have the first table share one thing while the other tables cross it off if it is on their table. The next table shares one thing and so on until everything has been crossed off.
12
PSB in Action There are 5 apples in baskets. There are two baskets. Show what the baskets could look like. Chelsea and Meredith 10:50-11:10 *Read the problem *Answer will tell me statement *Important information (Know/Need to Know) *Solo Time (actively monitor) *PAL (Look for basic solving and advanced solving) *Do a gallery walk and use sticky notes to give feedback. (I like/I wonder) *Share out (Have teachers give feedback - questions, compliments, comments) *Talk about the importance of modeling what PSB looks like and sounds like.

Ways to Extend Student Thinking
Take the problem further. Can they compare answer choices? Is there a higher level problem they can solve? Can students pose or create their own problem? Have students reflect on their thinking. Act it out Write about it Use manipulatives Discuss with a partner Create a final product (anchor chart, poster, Educreations, 30Hands, PicCollage) Work the problem out in advance so you can prompt student thinking! Use higher level questions. How do you know you are correct? Can you justify your answer? Is there another way to solve the problem? Is that the only correct answer? What is the most efficient way to solve the problem? Is your answer reasonable? Chelsea 11:10-11:15
14
PSB Reflection Create a double bubble thinking map that reflects the roles of teacher vs students during problem solving block. Chelsea 11:15-11:25 *Student Led *Teacher facilitates
