After Mexico had opened its Texas borders, Americans had poured into this new land.
Mexico had grown nervous about the amount of migrants already in Texas.
The Mexican government responded by closing its borders to American settlers and enforcing Trade Tariffs.
In addition, the Mexican government had insisted that all Mexican citizens be Roman Catholic.
All of these facts combined caused people to begin to talk of a revolution.
Mexico did begin to give up concessions about immigration, trade and religion. These concessions held off a revolution for a while, but soon the leader of Mexico, Santa Anna contributed to the revolution in his own country.

8. Texans Revolt Against Mexico

October 1835: Texans declared independence.
Santa Anna sent troops to squash the rebellion.

By early 1835 Santa Anna had become a dictator.
Discussion Question: What is a “dictator”? a ruler who has absolute, unrestricted control in a government
As this happened small rebellions popped up all over Mexico. Santa Anna stopped every one of them from getting out of hand.
As dictator, he did away with the constitution of Mexico. This was too much for even peaceful Stephen F. Austin.
A group of influential Texans met in October of 1835, and declared themselves independent.
Santa Anna responded to this rebellion as any other, he sent troops to quash it.

Most Texans understood that Mexico was still a threat even after its defeat. Texas applied to be annexed as part of the United States. However, the Northern states objected to another slave state joining the Union.
Texas remained an independent republic for 10 years.
Sam Houston, who was the most well known hero of the Texas Revolution was elected as the first President of Texas.
Texas still remains as the only state of the United States that was first its own independent country

In the 1840s, American Politicians debated whether or not to expand the size of the United States. Most people were for expansion, but some politicians, such as Henry Clay were against it. So for the 1844 election an unknown democrat, with Andrew Jackson’s support won the presidency.
James K. Polk was in favor of massive U.S. expansion. He called the United States expansion to the West its “Manifest Destiny”.

General Zachary Taylor ordered to occupy disputed area (Like Lilo)
Mexico considered this an act of war (Like Stitch) and Attacked Taylor’s forces

After Polk’s election, Congress quickly voted to annex Texas as a state, and further stated that the new U.S. border that included Texas stopped at the Rio Grande River.
This angered Mexico to the point that they refused to even meet with U.S. negotiators. The U.S. even offered to buy California and New Mexico, but they were refused a meeting.
Polk ordered General Zachary Taylor to occupy the area in dispute.
Mexico, considering this an act of war, attacked Taylor’s force.
Polk, believing the U.S. had to respond, encouraged Congress to declare war. So, in May of 1846, Congress declared war on Mexico.

In return for all of this land, the U.S. also had to pay $15 million in cash and $3.25 million to people in the new territory that claimed that Mexico owed them money.

The last bit of territory added to the continental U.S. was a strip of land across what is now southern New Mexico and Arizona.
In 1853, Mexico sold the land – called the Gadsden Purchase – to the U.S. for $10 million
James K. Polk had already secured the Northern U.S. boundary by splitting the Oregon Country with Great Britain. They agreed to split the land at the area of the current Canadian boarder.
Therefore, this new Gadsden Purchase formed the southern boarder and gave the United States its current shape. The U.S. now stretched from ‘sea to shining sea.”
