2. Answer
Strong earthquakes occur because a great deal of elastic deformation builds up along the faults where rock has not moved for awhile. The more deformation, the more energy the rock releases when it finally slips along the fault.

3. Did you know…?
Many scientists think part of the moon was once part of the Earth. It is thought that when the Earth was almost entirely molten, A Mars-sized object collided with the Earth, knocking part of Earth’s mantle. The mantle material and material from the impacting body began orbiting the Earth. Eventually, the orbiting material joined to form the moon.
