Plants week 7
2
Starter LO: To explain that plants needs soil, water, air and sunlight to grow Last week, we carried out an experiment to see what plants need to grow. Let’s take a look at our seeds and see how they are growing.
3
LO: To know the roles of parts of the flower in pollination
Success Criteria I can explain why insects and bees go to flowers and plants. I can name four new parts of the plant involved in pollination. I can identify these four parts and label them.
4
LO: To know the roles of parts of the flower in pollination
This week, we are going to be learning about pollination. We have already learned the names and functions of some parts of a plant. However, we still have a few more to learn.
5
LO: To know the roles of parts of the flower in pollination
A bee visits flowers to collect nectar to make honey. Nectar is a sweet liquid. The flowers make nectar to attract insects and birds.
6
LO: To know the roles of parts of the flower in pollination Pollination
Pollination:this is when pollen is carried from the male part of the plant to the female part of the plant. This makes the plant’s cells produce seeds.
7
LO: To know the roles of parts of the flower in pollination Anther
Pollen is made by the male part of the plant called the anther.
8
LO: To know the roles of parts of the flower in pollination Filament
The filament’s role is to hold up the anther. Flowers want insects to collect pollen so the filament is long to make it easier for the insects to collect pollen.
9
LO: To know the roles of parts of the flower in pollination Petals
Petals are often very brightly coloured. This is because their main job is to attract insects, such as bees or butterflies, into the flower. The insects pick up pollen from the flower, and carry it to the next flower they visit. This is how most flowers are pollinated.
10
LO: To know the roles of parts of the flower in pollination Stigma
The stigma’s job is to collect pollen from other plants.
11
LO: To know the roles of parts of the flower in pollination Style
The style’s job is to hold up the stigma.
12
LO: To know the roles of parts of the flower in pollination Let’s have a look!
In groups, you will be given a flower to examine. Try to find the different parts of the plant we have just discussed: Stigma, style, anther, petals and filament

LO: To understand the process of pollination
Success Criteria I can identify and name the parts of the plant. I can describe the process of pollination. I can sequence the steps of pollination.
20
LO: To understand the process of pollination
21
LO: To understand the process of pollination
What is pollination?
22
LO: To understand the process of pollination
The flower has opened and you can see the stamens inside. The anthers hold yellow dust-like material, called pollen.
23
Pollination story LO: To understand the process of pollination
1. The brightly coloured petals and the scent of the flower attract the bee. It enters the flower to collect nectar. Pollination story
24
LO: To understand the process of pollination
2. As the bee collects the nectar, pollen brushes onto its legs and body.
25
LO: To understand the process of pollination
3. The bee is then attracted to another flower.
26
LO: To understand the process of pollination
4. As the bee drinks more nectar, the pollen on its body lands on the sticky stigma. This is called pollination.
