1 THE USE OF REED BRIQUETTES IN A DOMESTIC HEAT BOILER

2 Summary The combustion performance of briquettes made from pure reed in a domestic boiler is presented. Combustion technique used is the reverse combustion. Analyze of combustion parameters (CO and NOx emission, flue gas temperature, air excess, combustion efficiency). Good behavior of reed briquettes in the domestic heating boiler with reverse combustion.

3 Biomass potential Biomass is the largest primary energy resource in the world. Biomass from agricultural residues are among Romania’s major potential energy resources. Agricultural residue potential is almost 63% of the total biomass quantity. Reed is large expanded in Romania (about 2 million ha).

4 Experimental device 40kW down draught boiler.
Briquettes diameter of 7cm and 15 cm length. Load for each test 10 kg of biomass. The temperature, CO, CO2, NOx and O2 in the flue gas , the combustion efficiency and the excess ratio (λ) were analyzed using Eurotron Ecoline 4000 gas analyzer.

5 Fuel Properties

6 Results Time dependence of combustion efficiency and CO in flue gas
The CO emission is high for all the fuel due to the high excess air ratio. Highest CO emission – acacia. Lower Co emission -sawdust .

7 Time dependence of NOx emission and excess air ratio
Highest NOx emission corresponds to the fuel with high content of N (sawdust). NOx emission decrease in time as the N from fuel is consumed and the T decrease.

8 Time dependence of O2 concentration in flue gas
The O2 content in the flue gas increase during the combustion process for all the combustibles because the flow of air introduced into the furnace is not adjusted well to the combustion condition.

9 Conclusion The behavior of reed briquettes in the 40kW boiler is the same as the wood logs and sawdust briquettes. Maxim combustion efficiency was obtained from sawdust briquettes. Combustion efficiency decreases in time for all the fuel. Large emission of CO (2%) for acacia logs. Large emission of NOx for sawdust briquettes.
