1 COMMUNITY REPS

2 Housekeeping In the event of a fire alarm sounding, please use your nearest exit and head to the lawn outside the front of the Northern Stage. Toilets are located at the end of the corridor, just past the double doors. To help promote the training we may take photos during the session. If you would prefer not to be in the photos, please let us know.

3 Welcome to representation
Congratulations on becoming a Community Rep! The Students’ Union is working hard to create a fully formed representation structure in the community to allow everyone to get the best possible experience.

4 Your Role To represent students in your area
To work alongside the city council and residents to enrich the local community and student involvement in it. To run campaigns that are relevant to residents within your ward, including students.

5 Areas covered The city is divided into many wards. To make things easier for Reps and students to understand we have renamed the wards in areas. City and West Heaton Jesmond West Jesmond Ouseburn Sandyford

6 Responsibilities Speaking to students in your local area to gather their opinions and provide them with feedback on their suggestions and comments. Arrange at least one community event or campaign per term. Attend regular ward meetings and local residents group meetings. Volunteer to attend either Student Council, or an SU committee.

7 Organising an event/campaign
As part of your key responsibilities within the role, you will be required to arrange, at least one community event per term, in consultation with the students in your community · Develop campaigns and events that will highlight the key issues in your area. All your events will be different. Previous community events have included ‘Leave Newcastle Happy’ and litter pick up’s.

8 Support As well as this initial training, you will also receive training or an induction for the Students’ Union committee that you attend. We will also look to organise events and campaigns training which would be suitable for Community Reps.  We will also organise Community Rep social events and we will always be available to answer any questions and support you with any issues you have. In addition we will provide you with a Community Rep hoody so you are visible to students in your area.

Dates of the additional training sessions and social events. Reps just need to head to and pick the session that they would like to sign up for.

11 Term update At the end of each term, we will ask you to complete a termly update. This will give you the opportunity to review your term in the role, highlighting

13 NCL+ Award Want to have your experience as a Community Rep recognised?
Then sign up for the NCL+ Award Accreditation Scheme All the information can be found in the ‘Employability’ section of the NUSU website. Or NUSU’s Jo Day NCL+ is the easy way to have the skills you develop as a rep and through the other extra curricular activities recognised. If you are an UG student it will also be recognised on your Higher Education Achievement Record.
