MAH Disaster Committee Ted Curcio MD, FACEP

2 Disaster Response General Principles
The MAH is preparing diligently for Disasters through bi-weekly Disaster Committee meetings. The threats include: Biological, Chemical, Radiation, and explosive devices. We are also preparing for natural Disasters such as: Swine flu, weather disasters, fire and many others.

3 Disaster Response The MAH is preparing diligently for Swine flu and other infectious diseases. Protocols are being developed for evaluation, isolation, and treatment. It is IMPORTANT that all staff receive the flu vaccine.

4 Disaster Preparedness - MAH
What we have in place: Communications All key personal have been distributed Alpha-pagers. These allow instant communication of impending Disasters. All key personal have cell phones which act as a back up system. Information is also available on the Internet.

6 Disaster Preparedness - MAH
What we have in place: Resources Disaster Response Team: A group of volunteers that help manage, decontaminate, and process patients that arrive in large numbers. Pharmacy: A federally issued MED pack containing important medications needed in case of a biological or chemical attack. YOU! All employees are considered an important resource in case of a disaster.

What you need to do in case of a Disaster. 1) Ensure your own Safety. 2) Ensure your patients Safety. 3) Report to your NIMS Supervisor.

8 Emergency Preparedness
The MAH uses a disaster planning structure called NIMS: National Incident Management System. This used to be called HEICS but is the same system. This Command system allows us to mount a response to any Disaster, large or small.

Each department has a NIMS supervisor. Do you know who is YOUR NIMS supervisor? Unless you are specifically assigned a NIMS role, your NIMS supervisor will be your regular supervisor.

What YOU need to know: Who is your NIMS supervisor? How would they contact you in case of a Disaster? Where is your Departments Disaster plan? What is YOUR role in your Departments Disaster Plan? Where do you report in case of a Disaster?

12 MAH Disaster plan In case of a Disaster:
The Disaster Executive Committee convenes via Phone Conference. all departments call in staff. all elective care stops. all stable patients discharged. families are placed in lobby. Disaster information is posted on the MAH web site. All available personnel report to the Cafeteria
