Jesus in Islam (Peace be Upon Him) AWARE Center

Articles of Faith It is one of the articles of Faith that all Muslims believe in the Prophets of Allah. The articles of faith are : Belief in Allah (He is the Lord, the Creator, the Originator,). Belief in the Angels. Belief in the Prophets of Allah. Belief in the Books of Allah (Psalms, Torah, Gospel, Quran) Belief in Predestination. Belief in the Day of Judgment. Belief in Life after Death.

Prophets in the Quran According to a saying of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) the number of prophets is 124,000. The Quran mentions 25 most prominent by name. Allah’s guidance to mankind which began with Adam (PBUH) was completed with Mohammed (PBUH). “The messenger believeth in what hath been revealed to him from his Lord, as do men of faith, each one (of them) believeth in Allah, His Angels, His books, and His Messengers. ‘We make no distinction (they say) between one and another of his Messengers.’ And they say: We hear and we obey: (we seek) thy forgiveness, Our Lord, and to thee is the end of all journeys.” (Quran 2 v285)

Allah sent Messengers “We did aforetime send Messengers before thee; of them there are some whose story we have related to thee and some whose story we have not related to thee. It was not (possible) for any messenger to bring a Sign except by the leave of Allah..” (Quran 40 v78) “We have sent thee inspiration, as we sent it to Noah and the Messengers after him: we sent inspiration to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the tribes, to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron and Soloman and to David we gave the Psalms.” (Quran 4 v163)

Prophets mentioned in Quran
Adam (Adam) Idris (Enoch) Nuh (Noah) Hud Salih (Salih) Ibrahim (Abraham) Ismail (Ishmael) Ishaq (Issac) Lut (Lot) Yaqub (Jacob) Yusuf (Joseph) Shuaib Ayyub (Job) Musa (Moses) Harun (Aaron) Dhul-kifl (Ezekiel) Dawud (David) Sulaiman (Soloman) Ilias (Elias) Al-Yasa (Elisha) Yunus (Jonah) Zakariyya (Zechariah) Yahya (John) Isa (Jesus) Muhammed (Peace Be Upon Them)

The Status of Jesus in Islam
In Islam, Jesus (PBUH) is regarded as one of the greatest Messengers of Allah. He is among those who received Divine Books as well as suffering greatly whilst delivering Allah’s message. “Therefore patiently persevere as did all messengers of firm resolution; and be in no haste about the (unbelievers).” (Quran 46 v 35) The 5 Messengers of firm resolution as mentioned above are: Abraham, Noah, Moses, Jesus and Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Them). They were elevated to this rank for their endurance without flinching in their faith of Allah, in fact the more they were humiliated the stronger their faith in God became. Haddith : “If anyone testifies that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, who has no partners and that Mohammed (PBUH) is His slave and Messenger and that Jesus (PUBH) is Allah’s slave and His Messenger and His Word which was bestowed on Mary and a spirit created by Him, and that Paradise is the truth and Hell is the truth, Allah will admit him to Paradise with the deeds which he had done even if those were few” (Bukhari #3435) Haddith : “I am the nearest of all the people to the son of Mary and all the Prophets are paternal brothers and there has been no Prophet between me and him (Jesus). (Bukhari #3442) “We made the son of Mary and his mother as a Sign..” (Quran 23 v50)

Mary, Jesus’s Mother A chapter of Quran is named after her. Chapter 19: Maryam Mary’s mother had prayed to Allah for a child and vowed she would make him a servant for the Holy house in Jerusalem (she thought she would have a son). Allah answered her prayer, she conceived & delivered Mary. “Behold! The angels said: ‘O Mary! Allah hath chosen thee and purified thee – chosen thee above the women of all nations’. O Mary! Worship the Lord devoutly: prostrate thyself and bow down (in prayer) with those who bow down’.” (Quran 3 v 42 & 43)

Mary’s Birth “Allah did choose Adam and Noah, the family of Abraham and the family of Imran above all people.” “Behold! Wife of Imran said: ‘O my Lord! I do dedicate into thee what is in my womb for thy special service: so accept this of me: for thou hearest and knowest all things’. When she was delivered , she said : ‘O my Lord! Behold! I am delivered of a female child!’ And Allah knew best what she brought forth – ‘And is not the male like the female. I have named her Mary, and I commend her and her offspring to thy protection from Satan the Rejected.” (Quran 3 v 33 & )

Mary’s upbringing “Right graciously did her Lord accept her: He made her grow in purity and beauty: to the care of Zakariya (PBUH) she was assigned. Every time that he entered the (mihrab – place of prayer) to see her , he found her supplied with sustenance * He said: ‘O Mary! Whence (comes) this to you?’ She said: ‘From Allah: for Allah provides sustenance to whom he pleases without measure.’ (Quran 3 v37) * Summer fruit in winter and winter fruit in summer.

Glad tidings “Behold! The Angels said: ‘O Mary! Allah giveth thee glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, held in honour in this world and the Hearafter and (of the company) of those nearest to Allah. He shall speak to the people in childhood and in maturity and he shall be (of the company) of the righteous.” (Quran 3 v45 & 46)

Mary’s reply “She said: ‘O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man hath touched me?’ He said: ‘ Even so; Allah createth what he willeth: when he hath decreed a matter, he but saith to it, ‘Be’ and it is!” (Quran 3 v47)

A Sign unto men “Relate in the Book (the story of) Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place in the East. She placed a screen (to screen herself) from them; then we sent to her Our angel and he appeared before her as a man in all respects. She said: ‘I seek refuge from thee to (Allah) most gracious: (come not near) if thou dost fear Allah.’ He said: ‘Nay, I am only a messenger from thy Lord (to announce) to thee the gift of a pure son.’ She said: ‘How shall I have a son, seeing that no man has touched me and I am not unchaste?’ He said: ‘So (it will be): thy Lord saith, ‘that it is easy for Me and we wish to appoint him as a sign unto men and a mercy from Us’ It is a matter so decreed.” (Quran 19 v16 -21)

Jesus’s Birth “So she conceived him and she retired with him to a remote place. And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree; she cried (in her anguish): Ah! Would that I had died before this! Would that I had been a thing forgotten. But (a voice) cried to her from beneath the (palm tree): ‘Grieve not! For thy Lord hath provided a rivulet beneath thee and shake towards thyself the trunk of the palm tree, it will let fall fresh ripe dates upon thee. So eat and drink and cool (thine) eye and if thou dost see any man, say, ‘I have vowed a fast to (Allah) most gracious and this day will I enter into no talk with any human being.” (Quran 19 v22-26)

Jesus defends his mother
“At length she bought the (babe) to her people, carrying him (in her arms), they said: ‘O Mary! Truly a strange thing hast thou brought! O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not a man of evil, nor was thy mother a woman unchaste! But she pointed to the babe. They said: ‘How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle? He said: ‘I am a servant of Allah: He hath given me revelation and made me a prophet: and He hath made me blessed wheresoever I be and hath enjoined on me prayer and zakat as long as I live; (He hath made me) kind to my mother and not overbearing or unblest; So peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die and the day that I shall be raised up alive!” (Quran 19 v27 – 33) Haddith : “None spoke in the cradle but three…” The first was Jesus….” The other two spoke to reveal their true parentage. (Bukhari #3436)

Allah is One! “In the name of Allah, most gracious, most merciful.
Say: He is Allah, the One and Only; Allah, the Eternal, Absolute; He begetteth not nor is He begotten; And there is none like unto Him.” (Quran 112)

Jesus’s early life He stayed in Egypt for some time before going to live in Nasirah. He spoke Syriac (the language of the people of Palestine at that time) At school he studied the Torah & memorized it. He was a pious worshiper following the rules of the Torah which was revealed to Prophet Moses (PBUH).

Jesus’s mission “And Allah will teach him the book and wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel. And (appoint him) a messenger to the Children of Israel, (with his message).” (Quran 3 v48 & 49) “ (I have come to you) to attest the Torah which was before me and to make lawful to you part of what was (before) forbidden to you; I have come to you with a sign from your Lord . So fear Allah and obey me.” (Quran 3 v50)

Jesus’s Disciples “It is Allah who is my Lord and your Lord; then worship Him. This is a way that is straight. When Jesus found unbelief on their part he said: ‘Who will be my helpers to (the work of) Allah? Said the Disciples: ‘We are Allah’s helpers, we believe in Allah and do thou bear witness that we are Muslims. Our Lord! We believe in what thou hast revealed and we follow the Messenger; then write us down among those who bear witness. And (the unbelievers) plotted and planned and Allah too planed and the best of planners is Allah.” (Quran 3 v51 – 54)

Revelation of Prophethood
Allah sent the revelation of Prophethood to Jesus when he was 30. Jesus (PBUH), like all the prophets, performed miracles as proof of his Prophethood. Many of his miracles were in curing illnesses since the people of that time were famous for being knowledgeable in medicine. He cured those seemingly incurable diseases e.g. leprosy & blindness. He also brought a dead man back to life. Surah Al-Ma’idah (Q 5 v ). Jesus asks Allah for a table from Heaven set with provisions. He used to travel from place to place calling people to Worship Allah.

Jesus’s Miracles “ ‘I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, in that I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breath into it, and it becomes a bird by Allah’s leave. And I heal those born blind, and the lepers, and I bring the dead to life by Allah’s leave; And I declare to you what ye eat, and what ye store in your houses.’ Surely therein is a sign for you if ye did believe.” (Quran 3 v49)

The Gospel / Injil “And in their footsteps we sent Jesus the son of Mary, confirming the Torah that had come before him: we sent him the Gospel: therein was guidance and light and confirmation of the Torah that had come before him: a guidance and an admonition to those who fear Allah.” (Quran 5 v 46) Muslims believe what is called “The Bible” today contains some true stories but it is not the original text which was revealed to Jesus. (PBUH).

His Ascension “They said in boast that ‘We killed Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah’ but they killed him not, nor crucified him. Only a likeness of that was shown to them. And those who differ therein are full of doubts with no (certain) knowledge. But only conjecture to follow, for a surety they killed him not. Nay Allah raised him up unto Himself; and Allah is exalted in Power, Wise.” (Quran 4 v157&158) “Behold! Allah said: ‘O Jesus! I will take thee and raise thee to Myself and clear thee (of falsehoods) of those who blaspheme; I will make those who follow thee superior to those who reject faith, to the Day of Resurrection: then shall ye all return unto me and I will judge between you of the matters wherein ye dispute. As to those who reject faith, I will punish them with severe chastisement in this world and in the Hereafter nor will they have anyone to help. As to those who believe and work righteousness Allah will pay them (in full) their reward; But Allah loveth not those who do wrong. This is what we rehearse unto thee of the signs and the message of Wisdom.” (Quran 3 v )

Jesus’s Descent to Earth.
Jesus (PBUH) is alive in Heaven and will descend to earth before the Day of Judgment. His descent will be one of the great signs that Judgment Day is very near. After his descent he will live for 40 years on earth ruling with the Shariah (of Prophet Mohammed [PBUH]). He will kill the Dajjal. He will perform Hajj. He will marry and have children. He will die and be buried .

No more than a Prophet “The similitude of Jesus before Allah is as that of Adam, He created him from dust, then said to him, ‘Be’ and he was.” (Quran 3 v59) “Christ the son of Mary was no more than a Messenger; many were the Messengers that passed away before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They had both to eat their (daily) food. See how Allah doth make His Signs clear to them…” (Quran 5 v75) “When Jesus came with clear signs, he said: ‘Now I have come to you with wisdom and in order to make clear to you some of the (points) on which ye dispute: therefore fear Allah and obey me. For Allah, he is my Lord and your Lord: so worship Him: this is a Straight Way.’” (Quran 43 v63 & 64 )
