1 Selective in the Use of the Facts

2 Selective in the Use of Facts
Being selective is not telling the whole truth about something.

3 Selective in the Use of Facts
STEP 1: READ THE SOURCES! STEP 2: READ THE QUESTION!

4 Challenge 2: Find the evidence which OPPOSES Oliver’s view!
It is essential that you find evidence in the sources that SUPPORTS the view AND which OPPOSES the view. Challenge 1: In the sources can you find any evidence which SUPPORTS Oliver Thomson’s view… Challenge 2: Find the evidence which OPPOSES Oliver’s view!

5 Support/Oppose Paragraphs =
Answer Writing Frame Short Intro Paragraph Support/Oppose Paragraphs = 2 pieces of evidence from 2 different sources + 1 comment in your own words. You will write three paragraphs with evidence in total, depending on what you have highlighted when reading the sources over. Either: 2 SUPPORT & 1 OPPOSE 1 SUPPORT & 2 OPPOSE Remember, in every evidence paragraph you must name all of your sources!!

6 Using the sources, there is evidence to both support and oppose Oliver Thomson’s view that “Victims of crime in Scotland receive satisfactory support” Oliver Thomson’s view is supported because victims on the whole are happy with the support they get from voluntary groups and the police (Source 3). This is backed up by Source 2 which shows that 69% of victims are happy with police support and further that 74% were happy with Victim Support Scotland. Both of these figures show a significant majority of victims are satisfied. Furthermore, The Scottish Government has made a very positive attempt to support victims of crime in introducing the Victim and Witness Bill (Source 3). This can be linked to the fact that over £5 million per year is provided by the Scottish Government to support Victim Support Scotland and they have committed to maintaining that level of funding (Source 1), highlighting that victims of crime are being well supported by the Scottish Government in both law and funding.

7 Overall, this answer had:
However, there is also evidence to oppose Oliver’s view as the Scottish Victim Crisis Centre is a voluntary group which has a 9 month waiting list for victims who wish to talk about their experiences of crime (Source 1). This is supported by Source 3 which says the funding given to some voluntary groups is simply not enough to support the level of demand for services such as counselling and advice, which suggests many victims of crime are left waiting for support. Overall, this answer had: Short intro paragraph 2 SUPPORT paragraphs 1 OPPOSE paragraph

8 Step 3: Structuring your answer
Using the sources , there is evidence to both support and oppose Kristen Nunez’s view, when she says “Countries which allow gun ownership are safer places to live” The first reason to support the view is in Source 1 when it states that a Harvard University study shows that there is no link between gun ownership and a lack of safety. This is backed up by Source 2 which states that France has comparatively few gun deaths and they allow gun ownership highlighting that countries which allow gun ownership are safer places to live. Another reason to support the view is… One reason to oppose the view is that…

9 In the USA levels of crime have fallen sharply
In the USA levels of crime have fallen sharply. A study from Harvard University says there is no evidence which proves widespread gun ownership among the general population leads to higher incidents of murder. This is backed by Source 2 which shows that France has comparatively few gun deaths and they allow gun ownership. However, Kristen is wrong as Japan is clearly the safest country as it has by far the lowest murder rate and it does not allow guns of any kind, shown in Sources 1 and 2. Brazil allows guns but has the second highest rate of violent crime and the highest murder rate [Source3]. Also from Source 2 it has the highest gun deaths showing that allowing gun ownership does not ensure safety.
