1 Warm Up In eighth century B.C., a group of Latin-speaking people built Rome, a small community along the Tiber River in Italy. This city expanded to include almost all of the Italian Peninsula. Between 264 and 133 B.C., Rome expanded west and east and became master of the Mediterranean Sea. The Roman Republic was one of the largest empires in antiquity. Its republican institutions proved inadequate for ruling such a vast empire. After bloody civil wars, Augustus created the Roman Empire, now led by a series of autocratic rulers. If you were to give this passage a heading, what would it be? 2. What is the central idea of the passage? 3. Explain the most interesting thing you learned from the reading and why it stood out to you. Be specific and reference the text.

For this unit we will explore the development of the Roman Empire. Rome grew from a small farming village into one of the world’s greatest empires. The facts that linked the empire together- a common language, a common money, and massive public work projects.

4 Lets utilize our ipads to locate Rome in Google Maps
Lets utilize our ipads to locate Rome in Google Maps. As a class we will answer the following questions: 1. What do you notice about the geography of Rome? 2. What countries surround Rome? 3. What continent is Rome located on? 4. How does Rome’s location compare to the other countries we’ve studied?

5 Independent Practice You will be given a timeline that compares major events happening in Rome, and in the rest of the world between 490 B.C. to 200 A.D. Choose one event from the timeline and write a paragraph predicting the general social, political, or economic consequences that could result from that event.

6 Group Work You will receive a map of Ancient Rome titled “Roman Empire at its Height”. Analyze the map- and each group will be asked to answer the following questions. Group 1-Using cardinal directions, compare and contrast the boundaries of Rome in 500 B.C with the boundaries in 200 A.D . Group 2-Looking at the map, what bodies of water might have added to the growth of Rome? Group 3-Why do you think the Romans desired to expand their empire? Group 4-What cities were a part of Roman territory in 500 B.C?

7 Closure Write three questions that come to mind after examining both the map and the time line. After you have had the opportunity to come up with questions, you will share your questions with the class, and peers will try and answer each others questions based upon what you already know.

8 Homework Complete a reading and comprehension questions.
