Pass- An open place in a mountain Subcontinent- A large piece of land that is smaller than a continent

6 India India is a peninsula. It is often referred to as a subcontinent
India was often protected from invaders by its mountains India gets most of its rain from monsoons Life in India depends upon the Indus and Ganges Rivers

7 Ancient India Cities Homes Cities were developed into districts
There were business districts and home districts Some homes were two stories high Some had indoor bathrooms and waste drained away in clay pipes

8 Ancient India How did people live? Written Language
People grew grains and vegetables in their soil People were able to irrigate their crops during the dry season Archeologists found tablets with pictograms

9 Hinduism The Vedas is a collection of writings about Indian life that is said to be holy Hindus believe in reincarnation Hindus believe in a caste system Hindus believe that everything is God “Braham is one yet expresses itself as many”

10 Caste Systems Religious leaders Rulers and warriors
Shopkeepers, landowners, and skilled workers Farmer, unskilled worker, slaves, servants

11 Ancient China Geography Great Wall and Canal
China is isolated by mountains and a desert The main rivers are the Yangtze and the Huang Ho (Yellow Rivers) Great Wall and Canal The great wall was built to keep out nomadic invaders The canal connects the two major rivers

Wooden homes were built along the yellow river Nobles lived in bigger homes The chief crop was millet

13 Society Land was given to noblemen
The poor could never own land and could only work the land of the noble people

People worshiped nature and dead relatives When they experienced bad events, the Ancient Chinese believed that it was because their dead relatives were unhappy

15 Decline of the Shang The Shang dynasty in China lasted over 500 years
The nation was invaded in The suppressed poor welcomed the invaders because they could only work the land of noblemen.

16 Why did ancient civilizations all start in river valleys?
Rivers valleys had fertile land where people could farm and settle. Rivers were a primary source of transportation
