Our Shield and Defender The Ancient of Days
Pavilioned in splendor And girded with praise

O tell of His might O sing of His grace Whose robe is the light Whose canopy space
8
The deep thunderclouds form On the wings of the storm
His chariots of wrath The deep thunderclouds form And dark is His path On the wings of the storm
9
Thy bountiful care What tongue can recite It breathes in the air It shines in the light
10
It streams from the hills It descends to the plain
And sweetly distills In the dew and the rain
11
Frail children of dust And feeble as frail In Thee do we trust Nor find Thee to fail

The Husband who Saves Hosea
26
1 The word of the Lord which came to Hosea the son of Beeri, during the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and during the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.2 When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, “Go, take to yourself a wife of harlotry and have
27
children of harlotry; for the land commits flagrant harlotry, forsaking the Lord.” 3 So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son. 4 And the Lord said to him, “Name him Jezreel; for yet a little while, and I will punish the house of Jehu for the bloodshed of Jezreel, and I will
28
put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel
put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel. 5 On that day I will break the bow of Israel in the valley of Jezreel.” 6 Then she conceived again and gave birth to a daughter. And the Lord said to him, “Name her Lo-ruhamah, for I will no longer have compassion on the house of Israel, that I would ever forgive
29
them 7 But I will have compassion on the house of Judah and deliver them by the Lord their God, and will not deliver them by bow, sword, battle, horses or horsemen.” 8 When she had weaned Lo-ruhamah, she conceived and gave birth to a son. 9 And the Lord said, “Name him Lo-ammi, for you are not My people and I am
30
not your God.” 10 Yet the number of the sons of Israel will be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered; And in the place where it is said to them, “You are not My people,” It will be said to them, “You are the sons of the living God.” 11 And the sons of Judah and the sons of Israel will be gathered
31
together, And they will appoint for themselves one leader, And they will go up from the land, For great will be the day of Jezreel. 2:1 Say to your brothers, “Ammi,” and to your sisters, “Ruhamah.”
32
2:2–13: God will remove His provision and protection and exposes her unfaithfulness.
8“For she does not know that it was I who gave her the grain, the new wine and the oil, And lavished on her silver and gold, Which they used for Baal.
33
13 “I will punish her for the days of the Baals When she used to offer sacrifices to them And adorn herself with her earrings and jewelry, And follow her lovers, so that she forgot Me,” declares the Lord.
34
2:14–23: God will restore His true people by betrothing Himself to them.
16 “It will come about in that day,” declares the Lord, “That you will call Me Ishi And will no longer call Me Baali.
35
19 “I will betroth you to Me forever; Yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice, In lovingkindness and in compassion,20 And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness. Then you will know the Lord.
36
23 “I will sow her for Myself in the land
23 “I will sow her for Myself in the land. I will also have compassion on her who had not obtained compassion, And I will say to those who were not My people, ‘You are My people!’ And they will say, ‘You are my God!’”
37
Then the Lord said to me, “Go again, love a woman who is loved by her husband, yet an adulteress, even as the Lord loves the sons of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes.” 2 So I bought her for myself for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer and a half of barley. 3 Then I said to her, “You shall stay
38
with me for many days. You shall not play the harlot, nor shall you have a man; so I will also be toward you.” 4 For the sons of Israel will remain for many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred pillar and without ephod or household idols. 5 Afterward the sons of Israel will return and seek the Lord their
39
God and David their king; and they will come trembling to the Lord and to His goodness in the last days.
40
To be rescued from the slavery of our spiritual infidelity:
41
1) We must see God as a holy husband who expects intimacy and faithfulness from His bride.
42
God provides for us (2:8) God protects us (2:9–13) God pursues us (2:14–15)
43
2) We must see ourselves as an unfaithful spouse who is naturally inclined to refuse God’s covenant love.
44
“Harlotry” and “adultery” (2:2) are metaphors for idolatry and pervade the book of Hosea (Hubbard, 41).
45
In ch. 4, Hosea says Israel has “played the role of the unfaithful spouse” four times.
46
know no other god except ME, for there is no savior besides Me (13:4).
47
Knowledge of God (2:8, 20; 4:1–6) – “Intimacy, loyalty, and obedience – the three-fold cord of the covenant are braided together in this word.”
48
She does not know that it was I who gave her the grain (2:8)
She forgot Me (2:13)
49
My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge (4:6)
50
3) We must allow God to redeem us from sin’s slave market and deliver us to life in His Son.
51
The more God’s prophets called them, the more they went from them; they kept sacrificing to the Baals and burning incense to idols. (11:2)
52
My people are bent on turning from Me. (11:7a)
53
Hosea illustrates the love of God
Hosea illustrates the love of God. “Like God, he irrationally loved someone who was not lovely, stayed committed to that love relationship in spite of great unfaithfulness by his covenant partner, and out of deep love forgave and took back a lover who betrayed him (Smith, 22).
54
How can I give you up, O Ephraim. How can I surrender you, O Israel
How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I surrender you, O Israel?. . . My heart is turned over within Me, All My compassions are kindled. I will not execute My fierce anger; I will not destroy Ephraim again. (11:8–9a)
55
God’s marriage proposal?
Q: How do we accept God’s marriage proposal?
56
Renounce your natural inclination to satisfy yourself with lesser gods
Look to the Son of Judah and King of David for salvation Repent – “turn, seek, and tremble” (3:5) Receive a new identity, a new life, and a new destiny in Christ.
57
“Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; Whoever is discerning, let him know them. For the ways of the Lord are right, And the righteous will walk in them, But transgressors will stumble in them.” (Hosea 14:9)

Jesus, keep me near the cross There a precious fountain
Free to all a healing stream Flows from Calvary's mountain
60
In the cross, in the cross Till my ransomed soul shall find
Be my glory ever Till my ransomed soul shall find Rest beyond the river
61
Near the cross a trembling soul Love and mercy found me
There the bright and Morning Star Shed his beams around me
62
In the cross, in the cross Till my ransomed soul shall find
Be my glory ever Till my ransomed soul shall find Rest beyond the river
63
Near the cross O Lamb of God Bring its scenes before me
Help me walk from day to day With its shadow o'er me
64
In the cross, in the cross Till my ransomed soul shall find
Be my glory ever Till my ransomed soul shall find Rest beyond the river
65
Near the cross I'll watch and wait Till I reach the golden strand
Hoping, trusting ever Till I reach the golden strand Just beyond the river. CCLI #606984

Higher than the mountains that I face
Stronger than the power of the grave Constant in the trial and the change One thing remains
101
Your love will never change
102
Your love never fails It never gives up Never runs out on me Your love
103
On and on and on and on it goes It overwhelms and satisfies my soul
And I never ever have to be afraid One thing remains
104
I'm confident and covered By the power Of Your great love
In death in life I'm confident and covered By the power Of Your great love My debt is paid There's nothing that can separate My heart from Your great love
