1. Jesus is our model

John 5: 16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defence Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honour the Son just as they honour the Father. Whoever does not honour the Son does not honour the Father, who sent him.

24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.

John 10: 1 - 6 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” 6 Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.

“Welcome to my world, come follow me!”
This is about leading a supernatural lifestyle. This is not about religion but adventure. This is more than just sharing words in a church service. It is Jesus Christ saying: “Welcome to my world, come follow me!”

Group Exercise Read John 1: 43 - 51
What do we learn about Nathaniel’s first response? How does Jesus pierce his defences? How doe we deal with sceptical people and might we need to change our approach? What do we think about Nathaniel’s response and Jesus’ further challenge to him?

2. The Prophetic Gift and its many Blessings

Acts 2: In the last days, God says,     I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy,     your young men will see visions,     your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women,     I will pour out my Spirit in those days,     and they will prophesy.

Judges 6 : 11 The angel of the Lord came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. 12 When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” 13 “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.”

14 The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?” 15 “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” 16 The Lord answered, “I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive.”

4. Discerning the True Voice of God

1 Thessalonians 5: 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good

Testing the prophetic word
Is it consistent with Scripture (2 Tim 3:16) Is its fruit faith and liberty (Romans 8:15) Is there edification (1 Corinthians 14:4) Does it resonate in the recipient’s spirit (Romans 8:16) Does it exalt Jesus (John 16:13-14)

“Judge the spirit of the prophecy before you judge the truth of the word.” (Graham Cooke)

5. Cultivating true friendship with God

Availability Obedience Humility

Christianity is a 24/7 relationship with God

Obedience is not always easy but it always advances His Kingdom

John 7:16-17 Jesus said “If anyone is willing to do his (God’s) will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is from God, or whether I (Jesus) speak from myself.”

(Moses was) “the most humble man on the face of the earth.”
Numbers 12:6-8 “When a prophet of the Lord is among you, I reveal myself to him in visions, I speak to him in dreams. But this is not true of my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my house. With him I speak face to face, clearly and not in riddles; he sees the form of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses.” Numbers 12:3 (Moses was) “the most humble man on the face of the earth.”

Humility and the ability to hear God’s voice are inseparable

Humility is to have a profound distrust in your own ability or goodness, and a profound trust in what God can do
