1 “FL Airport Shooting Suspect Appears In Court”

2 The man charged with shooting 11 people at Fort Lauderdale's airport Friday had his first court appearance Monday. Esteban Santiago, 26, was escorted into federal court in Fort Lauderdale in manacles. He told the Judge he understood the seriousness of the crimes he is charged with. Federal authorities say Santiago flew to the airport from Anchorage, Alaska. Upon arrival, they say, he removed a semi-automatic handgun from his checked luggage, loaded it in a bathroom, and began shooting people in the airport's baggage claim area. Five people were killed and six wounded. After appointing his attorney, the Judge set his detention hearing for Jan. 17. He'll be formally arraigned on Jan. 23, at which time he'll enter a plea. Santiago is charged with three counts: committing an act of violence at an airport with the intent of causing serious bodily harm, deadly use of a firearm, and using a firearm to commit a violent crime. The maximum penalty for the combined charges is death.

3 In Other News The Crimson Tide couldn't hold off two-time Heisman finalist Deshaun Watson, and the second-ranked Tigers upset No. 1 Alabama in a College Football Playoff title game rematch early Tuesday at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. With one second remaining, Watson found sophomore wide receiver Hunter Renfrow for the game-winning score, a 2-yard touchdown pass. It capped a fourth quarter in which the Tigers scored 21 points. It's Clemson's first national title since the 1981 season and the first time it has beaten a top-ranked team. Yesterday, January 9, marks the tenth anniversary since the unveiling of the iPhone by Apple’s then-CEO and "visionary leader", Steve Jobs. Before this point, having music on your phone usually meant a dodgy ringtone. And accessing the internet not on a computer? A rare occurrence. The iPhone changed all of this. Opinions on Apple and the products it releases can cause divides in the most friendly of settings, but it isn’t hard to recognize the impact the “three-in-one” device - as Jobs first described it - has had on the world of technology. The legacy from the first iPhone device still lives on; in 2016 it was announced that more than one billion iPhones had been sold since As part of the anniversary celebrations, Tim Cook has said the best of the device is still yet to come. The soon to be released iPhone 8 will apparently bring updates better than those seen in the phones since 2007.
