Thank you for going on this journey with us and for spending your time to better understand the financial support needed to educate our children helping us to define our destiny.

15 Vision We aspire to be a world-class educational community that
honors diversity, promotes high expectations for life-long learning and leadership, preparing all students to reach their fullest potential Brown Deer is a vibrant community – a wonderful place to live, work, learn and grow….and with your help there’s no reason we can’t become a world-class school district.

17 Strategic Plan - Action Priorities
Student Achievement Facilities & Grounds Communication Accountability Personalized Learning Over 70 stakeholders in our school community met this past school year to explore the development of a vision for our preferred future, study best educational and research practices, candidly discuss the issues facing our district in uncertain economic times, and most importantly recommend an academic plan that will allow the district to execute a 21st century culture of achievement accelerating academic success for all of our children. With this renewed focus and energy of a new strategic plan, our District now has a coherent plan and roadmap of strategies in five key areas. These initiatives will be implemented over the next five years as we aspire to become a world-class school district. I would like to thank everyone who participated in this process as well as the leadership of the Board of Education in developing this plan. Needless to say, we have been very busy…. See page 2 for more details about our goals and Action plans

18 Transformation and 21st Century Learning
Not only do we need to deal with the achievement of our students today, we also need to plan for the future. Our students need the skills and expertise to compete in a global environment. Our world is a different place and the demands for expertise and knowledge require a different skill set for our graduates. Transformational change is on the horizon.

21 Presentation of 2012-2013 Budget Inspire – Innovate - Lead Leading Together
Lisa Albers and Fran Peters At the core of effective systems are teachers who challenge students, develop positive relationships with them, and are very intentional in their use of a wide variety of teaching strategies. Effective schools and teachers set high expectations, provide whole-child student supports for students and ensure a high –quality learning experience in every classroom.

22 Presentation of 2012-2013 Budget Inspire – Innovate - Lead Revitalizing Our Campus
Our community has come together to bring new life to buildings in need of repair to support and create a legacy of educational opportunities and value for a lifetime. This collective vision is becoming a reality each and every day as we watch the impressive transformation of physical space reshape our campus with a new 38,000 square foot field house, a fitness center, modernized flexible classrooms, and community gathering spaces. Every classroom and learning space in this district will be touched or influenced by this transformation. Dr. Deb Kerr Emily Koczela

23 Transforming…

24 Transformation and 21st Century Learning
Student achievement and delivery will take on a new look – a more personalized approach Schools and learning will look and feel more like the modern world of work Learning will become the constant – not time Flexibility in learning will drive policy changes Increased use of technology Achievement will be measured in new forms – growth and mastery of skills

25 Fusing the 3Rs with the 4Cs
The 3Rs and the 4Cs Reading wRiting aRithmatic Fusing the 3Rs with the 4Cs Critical Thinking Communication Collaboration Creativity Our model of education has not been adjusted to respond to the realities of the 21st century community or workforce. Our students aren’t ready for the challenges of 21st century citizenship or 21st century jobs. Our current responses to these challenges are isolated and silo-ed. We do not currently have a systemic community response to these challenges. Everything that we do must have a connection and relationship to our end goal – ensuring all students have the skills to be prepared for college and career readiness. In collaboration with all representative groups of our school community, we developed this compact of high expectations for all stakeholders to elevate the level of achievement for our students. I hope that you will join in with us as we build upon our diverse strengths, enhance the learning opportunities for our students, and distinguish ourselves as a world-class district where excellence is the norm. This is about a personal connection to your student and his/her learning and everyone in our community has an important role to play.

Did You Know?/Shift Happens – Version 6 – 2012 By: David S. Rose, Karl Fisch, Scott McLeod and XPLANCE Embedded video on dlkerr7 has shared a video with you on YouTube "Did You Know?/Shift Happens" (Version 6, 2012) by davidsrosegust Did You Know? originally started out as a PowerPoint presentation for a faculty meeting in August 2006 at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colorado, United States. The presentation "went viral" on the Web in February 2007 and, as of June 2007, had been seen by at least 5 million online viewers. Today the old and new versions of the online presentation have been seen by at least 20 million people, not including the countless others who have seen it at conferences, workshops, training institutes, and other venues. The web site tells more about how this simple little presentation spread worldwide (which certainly was not the original intent) and provides complete credits for this and its predecessor versions. As you will see, there was lots of feedback, both positive and negative, about the presentation. When XPLANE offered to help with the redesign, they gratefully accepted its offer to make a "new and improved" version in order to try and help continue the conversation (and to ask more from viewers). This version, updated to early 2012, was created by David S. Rose for use in the Finance, Entrepreneurship and Economics program at Singularity University (singularityu.org). All of the contributors to this presentation believe that it is only through conversation, and subsequent action, that we will achieve the best possible education for our children. You are encouraged to download and share this video, and help keep it current by contributing updated versions to the ShiftHappens Wiki. "Did You Know?/Shift Happens" is licensed by David S.
