What is the Early Years Foundation Stage?
The EYFS document is the curriculum used for children aged 5 and under. There are 7 areas of learning: Personal, Social and Emotional Development Communication and Language Physical Development Literacy Mathematics Understanding of the World Expressive Arts and Design All areas of learning are reflected both inside and outdoors.

PSED - How can you help? You can help by encouraging your child to become independent by using the toilet, washing their hands and put on and fasten their coats. Playing games which encourage sharing and turn taking will help your child to build their social skills.

CL – How you can help? Reading books (stories, information books, newspapers, magazines, comics etc), encouraging your child to join in and talk about books Encouraging them to speak clearly and introducing new vocabulary Taking time to listen to them talking about things they’ve done and answering their questions

Physical Development Moving and Handling Health and self-care

PD – How can you help? Give your child time to run, jump, climb and play outdoors Talk about how we stay healthy and the importance of exercise and eating the right foods.

Literacy – How you can help?
Question children about what they are reading to check understanding. What do you think will happen next? How will they solve the problem? Play rhyming games and sing lots of rhyming songs Help children learn how to read and write their own name

Mathematics – How can you help?
Talk about the shapes you can see in the environment Pointing out numbers all around – how many can your child recognise? Sing lots of counting rhymes and songs to get your child used to saying number names in order

UW – How can you help? Talk with your child about the places they go and things they see in the world around them Answering and asking questions - what if…? Why do you think…? How did you…? If possible let them have access to ICT; CD players, programmable toys, computers etc

Exploring and using media and materials Being imaginative

EAD– How can you help? Talk with your child about their imaginative play and join in if possible! Encourage them to be flexible in their thinking and use of materials and praising them for their efforts or ideas as well as the end product

Assessment We set up our Reception classroom so that children can explore all of these areas of learning during their play. We will use a variety of assessment methods to record your child’s developments as they do this, including: Questioning and talking to your child Observations Photos Copies of their work Asking Parents - ‘wow moments’
