Year 6 Home Learning Home learning is an essential part of your child’s development as an independent learner. In Year 6, your child should be taking responsibility for knowing what has to be learned and when a piece of work has to be handed in. It is important that your child tries to manage their time personally. This will ease the transition into Year 7 when the workload will increase. The work which will be assigned will fall into two categories as outlined below. ESSENTIAL Daily Reading for 20 minutes Weekly Spellings – tested on Mondays Weekly English Homework – given out Mondays SPAG Writing Comprehension Weekly Mathematics – given out Thursdays Learn Times Tables, Maths Targets, Days of the Week, Months of the Year and Seasons Topic/Science Related Work – given out Wednesdays (your child will be able to choose from a selection of tasks which will cover a wide range of subject areas) DESIRABLE General Knowledge Listen to the news ( e.g. Newsround) in order to keep up to date with current world and local affairs Know the countries of the EU Recognise the shapes of the countries of the world Learn the names and be able to locate the major towns, cities and rivers and mountain ranges of the UK Learn the names and be able to locate major oceans, rivers, continents, deserts and mountain ranges of the world Learn the names and recognise the leaders of the main political parties of the UK Use money and measures in real life situations (eg shopping, cooking) Tell the time using analogue and digital clocks Learn about the city of Bristol by visiting landmarks and places of interest
