3 The evaluation schedule for the inspection of maintained schools and academies published by Ofsted in January 2012 identifies and requires inspectors to evaluate four main areas of a school’s work: The achievement of pupils at the school The quality of teaching in the school The behaviour and safety of pupils at the school The quality of leadership and management of the school However, in making that judgement on Overall Effectiveness inspectors must take into account the school’s provision for the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of its pupils.

4 Outstanding The school’s thoughtful and wide ranging promotion of the pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development enables them to thrive in a supportive, highly cohesive learning community. Good Deliberate and effective action is taken to create a cohesive learning community by promoting the pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Satisfactory The school takes reasonable steps to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, enabling them to develop the skills and personal qualities needed to work together in a generally cohesive learning community. Inadequate There are important weaknesses in the school’s promotion of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, resulting in a poor climate for learning and an incohesive school community where pupils or groups of pupils are unable to thrive.

6 Before we undertake any form of auditing, monitoring or improvement planning in any area of spiritual, moral, social or cultural development it is vital that the school as a whole organisation has a clear, shared understanding of what each area means related to their specific context. Pause for thought: Could all staff and governors give a consistent definition of what pupils’ spiritual development means in our school?

7 Spiritual Development
The Ofsted Definition Spiritual development is the development of the non-material element of a human being which animates and sustains us and, depending on our point of view, either ends or continues in some form when we die. It is about the development of a sense of identity, self-worth, personal insight, meaning and purpose. It is about the development of a pupil’s ‘spirit’. Some people may call it the development of a pupil’s ‘soul’; others as the development of ‘personality’ or ‘character’. Ofsted Guidance

8 Moral Development The Ofsted Definition Moral development is about the building, by pupils, of a framework of moral values which regulates their personal behaviour. It is also about the development of pupils’ understanding of society’s shared and agreed values. It is about understanding that there are issues where there is disagreement and it is also about understanding that society’s values change. Moral development is about gaining an understanding of the range of views and the reasons for the range. It is also about developing an opinion about the different views. Ofsted Guidance

9 Social Development The Ofsted Definition Social development is about young people working effectively with each other and participating successfully in the community as a whole. It is about the development of the skills and personal qualities necessary for living and working together. It is about functioning effectively in a multi-racial, multicultural society. It involves growth in knowledge and understanding of society in all its aspects. This includes understanding people as well as understanding society’s institutions, structures and characteristics, economic and political principles and organisations, roles and responsibilities and life as a citizen, parent or worker in a community. It also involves the development of the interpersonal skills necessary for successful relationships.

10 Cultural Development The Ofsted Definition
Cultural development is about pupils’ understanding their own culture and other cultures in their town, region and in the country as a whole. It is about understanding cultures represented in Europe and elsewhere in the world. It is about understanding and feeling comfortable in a variety of cultures and being able to operate in the emerging world culture of shared experiences provided by television, travel and the internet. It is about understanding that cultures are always changing and coping with change. Promoting pupils’ cultural development is intimately linked with schools’ attempts to value cultural diversity and prevent racism. Ofsted Guidance

13 What next? Teachers need to be aware of when they are planning for/ teaching aspects of SMSC – it’s already there! All staff working in school need to provide positive role models and exploit opportunities to promote SMSC development SMSC Policy to be in place Monitoring of SMSC in planning/ lessons/ work in books Collecting evidence in a central ‘file.’ Evidence to include staff / Gov feedback, lesson plans, photos, children’s work, video clips, minutes from meetings, school council involvement………
