1 Ephesians 5:21-33 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

2 Ephesians 5:21-33 22Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

3 Ephesians 5:21-33 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

4 Ephesians 5:21-33 25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,

5 Ephesians 5:21-33 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

6 Ephesians 5:21-33 28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

7 Ephesians 5:21-33 29After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church– 30for we are members of his body.

8 Ephesians 5:21-33 31“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” 32This is a profound mystery–but I am talking about Christ and the church.

9 Ephesians 5:21-33 33However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

10 Living Beyond The Dash, #3 Marriage Matters
Larry Cline | Hardin Valley Church Of Christ |

11 The greatest thing we can ever do to pass down a rich legacy to our kids, apart from loving God, is to love their Mom.

12 The husband is to be a leader.
For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, he himself [being] the savior of the body. (Ephesians 5:23) The husband is to be a leader.

13 The husband is to be a lover.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her. (Ephesians 5:25) The husband is to be a lover.

14 A leader who does not love his wife is a harsh dictator
A leader who does not love his wife is a harsh dictator. A lover who does not lead her is a spineless wimp. A husband who is both a leader and a lover is a man who opens the door to a great legacy.

15 Charge #1: Dad’s, lead your wife!
22Wives, [be subject] to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself [being] the Savior of the body. (Ephesians 5:22-23)

16 FOUR KEY WORDS to help us see the truth about “headship”

17 1. Equality Galatians 3:26-28 Because we are one in Christ, our difference must be one of function and role, not value or importance.

18 2. Authority Literally headship means the right to rule.
“be subject to” (hupotasso) = “to line up under”

19 There is a chain of command designed by God for the home.
But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. (I Corinthians 11:3)

20 “I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30)
Who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped. (Philippians 2:6) “BEHOLD, I HAVE COME TO DO YOUR WILL.” (Hebrews 10:9a)

21 3. Responsibility Authority always brings responsibility. [He must be] one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity (I Timothy 3:4)

22 4. Intimacy The head must never be detached from the rest of the body. Just like in marriage. A man’s headship implies that he is to live in close intimacy with his wife.

23 You husbands in the same way, live with [your wives] in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered. (I Peter 3:7)

24 Live with your wife knowing her unique temperament, personality, strength, weaknesses, and breaking (or boiling) points. Husbands, our wives long for us to be intimate with them. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. (I John 4:8)

25 Charge #2: Dad’s, love your wife!
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her. (Ephesians 5:25)

26 The only real stability in marriage is produced by firm commitments that hold two people steady when emotions are fluctuating wildly.

27 SIX “UN” LOVE KEY WORDS to help us properly LOVE our wives.

28 1. Unconditional love Ephesians 5:25 Agape love –
A choice of the will, not a feeling of the emotions.

29 2. Unreserved Love Ephesians 5:25b – Just as Christ “gave Himself up for her” John 15:13 - Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. II Corinthians 8:9 - …He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.

30 3. Undefiled Love Love wants only the best for the one loved.
26so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. (Ephesians 5:26-27)

31 4. Understanding love Ephesians 5:31 – the marriage relationship becomes one in the Lord, or “one flesh”. 28So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; 29for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also [does] the church, 30because we are members of His body. (Ephesians 5:28-30)

32 5. Unending love FOR THIS CAUSE A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER, AND SHALL CLEAVE TO HIS WIFE; AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH. (Ephesians 5:31) NAS-1977

33 To “cleave” - (proskollao)
Means, literally to glue or weld something permanently together. Divorce is to be avoided at all costs. God HATES divorce (Malachi 2:16)
