Overview of SWK 301 The first two weeks of the course are spent in class preparing students for entry into a community practice setting The following 10 weeks, students will participate in a weekly classroom session and 6 hours/weekly (60 hours) in a community practice setting The course instructor will be the liaison for the school, student and agency

AGENCY EXPECTATIONS provide student with opportunities for direct contact with client population provide direct observation of a student’s activities by designated staff provide direction, support and mentoring oversight may be provided by a designated staff member provide ongoing feedback of student’s performance/behavior through the use of the student weekly journal/reflection form verify completion of hours on the student journal form

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
complete 60 hours of community practice in an assigned agency (6 hours a week for 10 weeks) manage the logistics of their community practice experience conduct oneself in a manner appropriate to professional expectations demonstrate self-motivation and initiative complete student section of journal/reflection form and have designated staff complete feedback section, as well as providing a signature confirming number of hours completed submit weekly journal/reflection form to course instructor to meet all the expectations outlined in the course syllabus

Review of tip sheet Review agency website to learn about the mission and services provided. Contact your community practice site Introduce yourself as a Syracuse University SWK 301 Community Practice student Ask about the orientation process such as background checks/fingerprinting/clearances and make a plan to do this BEFORE you leave for the summer. Discuss the days in which you anticipate being in community practice in the fall. Thank them for taking the time to teach you about their program/agency/organization Notify the field office that you have made this contact and have gone through the necessary clearances (if applicable). Are there other students going to the same site and if so, can you carpool?
