Aim #47: How do scientists clone organisms?
Hello Dolly!!
4
Jurassic Park Cloning Video Clip ~3 minutes

1) What is a Clone? A clone is an organism that is genetically
identical to the organism from which it was produced.
6
2) Do the cells of our body make exact copies of themselves?
Yes! When? Repair Growth
7
3) What process ensures that the offspring will be genetically identical?
DNA Replication
8
4) Asexual Reproduction:
X X X X Parent Offspring X X Genetic Information (DNA) a) How many parents? b) How does the genetic Information between the parent and offspring compare?
9
5) Cloning vs. Asexual Reproduction
Cloning is a technique that accomplishes the same end result as __________reproduction. asexual What is the end result? The production of offspring with identical genetic information as the parent.
10
6) Can we clone organisms that normally reproduce sexually?
Scientists have recently been able to clone animals.
11
How is this done?
12
7) Steps of Cloning: The nucleus from an egg cell is removed.
The nucleus of a somatic cell from a donor is removed. The nucleus of the somatic cell is placed inside the egg cell. The egg cell with the new nucleus is placed inside the womb. When the baby is born, it will have the same genetic information as the donor.
13
8) Why Clone? 1) Clone Stem Cells 2) Revive endangered or
extinct species 3) Reproducing a deceased pet 4) Clone humans??
14
9) How are Identical Twins Formed?
Fertilization Mitosis + Sperm Egg Zygote Twin #1 Twin #2
15
10) Why do Identical Twins look alike?
After the cell is fertilized, it begins to divide by mitosis. Zygote Therefore the genetic information is identical in each of the cells.
16
11) How are Fraternal Twins Formed?
+ Sperm Egg Zygote + Sperm Egg Zygote
17
12) Why do Fraternal Twins look different?
They are formed from two different sperm and two different eggs. Zygotes
