4 KEY TRENDS…

5 Technology Trends Relaxed operating standards Servers without UPS
Social technologies Mobile devices Energy consciousness Lower Tiers Co-location Rising security concerns 4 Converged IT Schneider Electric Prefabricated modular data centers Confidential New cooling techniques

6 Key Trends in IT Server / IT Consolidation, Virtualization,
Technology Compaction is major trend impacting rack design Rack-optimized servers occupying less U space with increased depth Increasing number of servers per rack enclosure Increasing power densities in rack enclosures (>4kw per Rack is very common) IT Infrastructure Convergence 4. Energy Costs going up – focus on Energy Efficiency and Green 5. Data Cabling is still using Cat 6 / 6a in majority although fiber is also common 6. Outsourcing trends, usage of cloud technologies APC by Schneider Electric – NetShelter SX – November 2010

7 Business Drivers >> IT Trends
● Higher Performance ● Doing more with less Key IT Trends Centralized IT Environments / Consolidation Logical, Rational, Physical Compaction Faster, smaller

8 Basic Consolidation Components
● Logical: Actual systems are still distributed while administrative procedures and processes are standardized company wide. ● Rational: Distributed applications and services are combined onto fewer servers. ● Physical: Systems are moved from distributed sites to fewer, centralized locations resulting in better staff utilization, simplified backups and restores, better asset management and security and reduced real estate costs.

9 Physical Consolidation Phases
Phase 1: Consolidating servers within existing racks. Phase 2: Intra-building consolidation to recover real estate space and collocate functions. Phase 3: Inter-building consolidation to centralize server functions and recover space. Phase 4: Logical consolidation by employing high capacity servers and storage network devices. 12 IT Infrastructure Convergence
SERVERS STORAGENETWORK “Nearly 2/3rds of the infrastructure that supports enterprise applications will be packaged in some type of converged solution by 2017” Wikibon August 2012 – ‘Converged Infrastructure Takes the Market by Storm ’

13 IT Infrastructure Convergence
Converged infrastructure packages multiple IT components into a single, optimized computing solution

14 Energy Efficiency Electricity usage costs have become an increasing fraction of the total cost of ownership (TCO) for Data Centers. JR

15 Data Centers of Today Data Centers of 1980’s

16 Understanding the top challenges which have Implications on the Racks

17 Cooling the Server – all about Airflow
IT Trends: Impact on Performance Cooling the Chip Cooling the Server – all about Airflow

18 Cooling the Data Center – all about Airflow
Cooling the Cabinet – all about Airflow Cooling the Data Center – all about Airflow

19 Rack Challenges ●Power Distribution
20 x 1 / 2U Servers with dual power supplies = 40 power cables. How do you power them with 6 socket power strip? How do you proactively manage power distribution in a dual power supply? How not to trip the breaker feeding the Whip or circuit? APC White Paper 29 Each power supplies drawing 10A per feed Each power supplies drawing 10A per feed

20 Power Distribution Issues

21 Rack Challenges ●Cable Management
20 x 1U Servers = 40 power cords, 20 data line cables. How do you manage these cables? 900mm deep rack enclosures not sufficient for thinner but longer servers causing cable management issues

22 Frequent IT changes create chaos resulting in human error

23 Rack Challenges… ●Compatibility ●Environment to the Rack Level
“My company was using HP and now we have standardized on Dell. Now, I can not fit my Dell servers into HP racks or my previous Racks…” ●Environment to the Rack Level Monitoring the environmental conditions around critical equipment is a key part of maintaining high availability. Detecting rack hot spots, smoke, fire, water, and unauthorized access is critical ●Management to the Rack Level Tools to remotely monitor and control, easily and economically ●Logistics Various Transport and Logistics issues - poor roads conditions, Elevators not available etc. ●Weight Ability to handle equipment of various weights – upto 1000 Kg or even more!

24 Agenda Key Trends 1 2 Implications of the Trends - Research 3
Possible Solutions 4 Solutions Details

25 Rack Solutions ●Air Flow (Rack as an enabler)
Perforated Front and Rear Doors - 65%+ perforation Ability to blank any open spaces at the front to ensure no air mixing Space at the rear to mount Rackmount PDUs in zero “U” space and in a recessed way so that PDUs do not block the airflow Enough space for cable Management so that Cables do not block airflow Additional Best Practices: Use of Blanking panels (reduces the temperature by 8 degrees C by using blanking panel) Hot and cold aisle arrangement Temperature measurement to detect any temperature rise Containment (Cold Aisle or Hot Aisle) Cooling solutions – Room, Row or Rack level

26 High-Density Cooling Hot Aisle Cold Aisle Hot Aisle Cold Aisle

27 Rack Solutions Power Distribution A B Rack mount PDU ●Basic ●Metered
●Metered and Switched ATS for Single Corded Servers that needs higher availability- quick demo if needed Upto 42 outlets x 2 = 84 outlets per rack and with mounting possible on the same side of the Rack Metering of power consumption within the rack allows planning for dual power supply A B Schneider Electric Confidential

28 Rack Solutions Cable Management 1070mm deep – more room
Cable Management accessories ●Tray ●Hoops ●Arm Overhead Cable Troughs for cable management instead of cabling under the raised floor ●Cabling under raise floor makes it tough to adapt to ever changing IT requirements

29 Rack Solutions ●Compatibility
APW President racks are multi vendor compatible Will work with any 19” rack mount standard device The mounting posts are movable to accommodate narrower cable intensive gear such as large routers Keep Tab on new equipment coming into the market and ensure that Racks remain Compatible with all old and new IT equipment Schneider Electric Confidential

30 Rack Solutions ●Environment to the Rack Level
●Monitor temperature, humidity, security and power draw to the rack level ●Proactively make decision on expansion if the density of rack increases to threshold levels Netbotz Solutions for Physical Threat Management Schneider Electric Confidential

31 Rack Solutions ●Logistics ●Weight Additional Criteria
Standard Product available locally Excellent packing for rugged handling ●Weight ●Racks upto 3000 Pounds or approx Kgs Static Load However, weight handling capacity of the Racks is NOT a key challenge and it is only an indicator that weight needs to be viewed along with other key criteria Additional Criteria UL Certification Cisco Certified Cabinets for Networking
