1 OXO-Biodegradable Plastic- An Indigenous Technology of Plastic Waste Management
-Nachiket Gokhale(BT14CME033) -Silkesha Asole (BT14CME016) -Aparajita Dhoble (BT14CME025)

2 Categorizing the Case Study
Technology/FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Good) Waste Management   Biodegradable Bags and Garbage Bins

3 Various points on which the case study is analyzed
Need Identification and Validation Market Size Previous Attempts: Literature and Patent Survey Probable Customers Discussion on their Failure and Success Business Model Target Audience/ Market Subsidy Model Audience Survey Publicity Product Review (review by customers) Assessing Product vs. Service Stake Holders Life Cycle Assessment Other probable Solutions Aesthetics Feasibility of the Product Standards Limitations Regulations/Legislations Value for Money Intellectual Property Issue Production costs Freedom to sale

4 Plastics: An inseparable curse
1 million plastic bags per minute all over the globe…!!!

5 Why plastics are prevalent?
Lightweight, affordable and easily available. Cheaper to manufacture. Alternatives are not cheap/abundant. Lack of awareness. Laws not being enforced.

6 Previous approaches to deal with plastic waste
3 R’s Principle: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Paper bags/Cloth bags Go digital: No need for plastic cds, floppies, etc Thick plastic bags (>2.5 mils) PETs Polylactic acid (PLA) based bags, primarily made out of corn Awareness Campaigns

7 Need For Biodegradable Plastic
Take less time to break down Renewable Good for the environment Require less energy to produce Non-toxic Easier to recycle

8 HPL is importing the technology of TDPA (Totally Degradable Plastic Additives) from Canada to India.

9 Typical users of the product
Target Market Packaging industries Agriculture Food Drinking water.

10 Typical users of the product
Target Market Packaging industries Agriculture Food Drinking water. Market Needs Need of biodegradable plastic whose waste management is not as a hazardous as that in case of conventional plastic in use. Also it must be able to serve the purpose without any compromise.

11 Forms of plastics Recyclable plastics Thermoset plastics Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Low Density Poly Ethylene (LDPE) Poly Vinyl Chloride(PVC) High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) Polypropylene(PP) Polystyrene (PS) etc. Alkyd Epoxy Ester Melamine formaldehyde Phenolic formaldehyde Silicon Urea formaldehyde Polyurethane metalized and multilayer plastics etc. IN SHORT, it has capacity to replace the complete Plastic Market…!!!

15 Stake Holder Standards
This plastic can be processed on the machinery and industry where the current conventional plastics are processed. So there is no need of any major changes in the system of processing accept some minor (1-2%) additional costs. Standards It is tested to ASTM D6954 or BS 8472 to prove that it degrades and biodegrades without becoming toxic in a chosen timescale.

16 Stake Holder Standards

17 Advantages Degradation can be controlled upon the products requirement
Product life can be increased by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat (below 35C.) No special equipment or processing to incorporate TDPA into plastics. They are re-useable and recyclable and are found to be fully compatible with recycling stream. Non-toxic and safe for food contact applications. It is a cost effective technology with just 1-2% addition rates for manufacture.

18 Disadvantages The initial replacement can be a challenge as the additional costs are also need to be incorporates. The new technology needs some changes in the conventional plastic manufacturing. It cannot withstand direct sunlight for a long period.

19 Summarizing the Analysis
Need Identification and Validation Need is identified and validated Previous Attempts: Literature and Patent Survey Previous attempts were studied Discussion on their Failure and Success Yes Target Audience/ Market Complete Plastic Market Audience Survey General plastic related problems Product Review (review by customers) Very good Response Stake Holders Packaging Industries Other probable Solutions Discussed Feasibility of the Product Assessed Limitations cited Value for Money Production costs Economical

20 Summarizing the Analysis
Market Size Global Market Probable Customers Packaging Industries (chiefly) Business Model As discussed Subsidy Model May be initially requires Publicity Public awareness Assessing Product vs. Service Replacement Life Cycle Assessment Product is Sustainable Aesthetics Helps environment from plastic related problems Standards ASTM D6954 or BS 8472 Regulations/Legislations Not applicable Intellectual Property Issue None Freedom to sale Yes
