Migrant Domestic Workers
In the Gulf Countries, the Philippines has become increasingly dominant in sending domestic workers since the 1970s. India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia have been the other major providers. Since the 1990s, a growing number of Ethiopian domestic workers have also been working in the Gulf countries. In Israel, in addition to Filipino migrants recruited to take care for the elderly and handicapped, there were Latinas and Black Africans who were incorporated as cleaning and care workers.

Why? socioeconomic and political conditions in the sending countries were far from being promising large wage gaps between the countries of origin and host countries social and economic expectations of the migrant women. Most of the women aim to save large amount of money in a short period of time and invest in a business (on their return to home countries. Another major goal is to secure a better education and future for their children.

How are the migrant domestic workers recruited?
Recruitment Agencies: Recruitment agencies in sending countries organize women’s migration and actively search for women who may be interested in migration abroad. In receiving countries employment agencies function as intermediaries between families looking for migrant domestic workers and women willing to work abroad. Friends and Relatives
