Best Practices in Leadership Development: Butte College Leader Development Institute (BCLDI)
4CSD Conference – Claremont, CA March 16 & 17, 2017 Teresa Ward, Ed.D. Faculty Professional Development – Butte College
2
BCLDI – History BCLDI was created in 2005 as a way to offer a leadership curriculum for staff, faculty and administrators that is both comprehensive and rigorous, and provides and fosters a strong network of support and cooperation amongst the participants. The vision is to institutionalize a process by which Butte College grows and nurtures its own current and future leaders. As a result of BCLDI, Butte College will have a sufficient number of well prepared, skilled and connected staff ready to fill leadership roles as they emerge. Leadership is needed at all segments of the college and in various contexts, formal and informal, temporary and permanent.

BCLDI -- Definition BCLDI is a two-year professional development program designed to facilitate the expansion of people’s capacity to be effective leaders. Participants’ personal and professional commitment to the entire program is essential as they are supporting their own leadership development along with that of peers.
4
BCLDI -- Purpose BCLDI is designed for motivated people who want to challenge themselves and others – both professionally and personally – in a supportive environment with expert peers and trainers. College employees who are ready to grow, support others in their growth, and gain intensive feedback to develop or strengthen the leader within, then they are ready for BCLDI.

BCLDI – Participants: BCLDI open to all staff, faculty and administrators who wish to further identify and develop their leadership skills.

BCLDI – Curriculum The core curriculum has been specifically designed to help participants expand their capacity to be effective in professional leadership roles and processes. The BCLDI curriculum uses the American Association of Community Colleges “Competencies for Community College Leaders” as the framework for the program. The curriculum includes outside reading and writing assignments, as well as group work and presentations. BCLDI faculty participants may enroll in and receive credit for 3 units the first year and 2 units the second year (or may elect to use the program for Flex hours).
