1 Indirect Object Pronouns
Lui and Leur Lui = to/for him or her (singular) Leur = to/for them (plural)

2 We saw this earlier with en. J’en voudrais deux. I want two of them.
In French, pronouns used to replace people or things, usually come in front of the verb. Subject + object + verb We saw this earlier with en. J’en voudrais deux. I want two of them. This is different from English, where our pronouns come after the verb. Subject + verb + object

3 Lui and Leur can only be used if:
The verb being used takes à (to) or pour (for). The recipient (indirect object) is a person. *For once, gender doesn’t matter, just number.

4

5 The answer is “Yes.” J'offre les fleurs à ma mère. The à ma mère is replaceable because it has à followed by a noun. It would become: Je lui offre les fleurs.

6

7 The answer is “No. ” Je voudrais des fleurs
The answer is “No.” Je voudrais des fleurs. There is no indirect object to replace. Remember, an indirect object will be preceded by: à = to, in, at -or- pour = for

8 Placement Rules If there is one verb, lui/leur goes before the verb. Think about it being connected to the verb. Ex. Je lui téléphone. I’m calling him/her. Je ne lui téléphone pas. I’m not calling him/her.

9 2. If there are two verbs, lui/leur goes between the two verbs.
Ex. Je vais lui téléphoner. I’m going to phone him/her. Je ne vais pas lui téléphoner. I’m not going to phone him/her.

10 3. In a positive command, lui/leur goes after the verb, and needs a hyphen. (This is an irregular placement in French, but it makes sense in English.) Ex. Téléphone – lui! Phone him/her!

11 4. In a negative command, lui/leur goes in front of the verb (where it really belongs in French).
Ex. Ne lui téléphone pas! Don’t phone him/her!

12 Verbs that usually take indirect object pronouns

Did you come up with: Henri lui écrit. Here’s why. Henri écrit à sa petite amie. à sa petite amie = à (to) + person One person = lui lui goes in front of the verb, écrit – to write, and it replaces the indirect object.

15

16 Did you come up with: Nous allons leur donner un cadeau. Here’s why
Did you come up with: Nous allons leur donner un cadeau. Here’s why. Nous allons donner un cadeau à nos grands-parents. à nos grands-parents = à (to) + people Two people= leur leur goes in front of the 2nd verb, in a 2 verb construction, and it replaces the indirect object.
