To better understand the reasons for European exploration, think back to sixth grade social studies when you learned about Cultural Identity and Nationalism

In order to explore the New World the King or Queen of the Mother Country had to give them a charter or commission (permission) in order to sail. The Mother Country usually received a portion of any riches discovered.

All three countries explored for the same reasons---

At this time, explorers were searching for
Gold

And once they began to explore the New World, they thought they would find lots of gold.

Nationalism and desire for gold caused the people to want
Glory for their homeland.

Who am I? I never explored in Texas, but I conquered the Aztecs in Mexico(1519) for Spain through superior weapons and disease. The Aztecs thought I was a God. I founded the city of Veracruz, Mexico Mexico Cortes

Who am I? I sailed in 1519 for Spain and was the first to map the coast of Texas. Cortes arrested some of my party. I never really landed on Texas soil but established settlement near Tampico, Mexico. Pineda ~

Who am I? NARVAEZ First to set foot in Texas 1526
Granted permission to explore between Florida and Mexico – governor of any new lands Went to meet his ships off gulf of Florida and they never showed up – built rafts and tried to sail to Mexico but most were drowned in hurricane 80 landed in Galveston Bay – Karankawas helped but Indians died from European diseases

Who am I? Cabeza de Vaca Survivor of the Narvaez expedition from Spain-took survivors to Mexico First to explore the interior of Texas. I lived with the Karankawas – I learned from them about natural medicines and my medical knowledge would impress other tribes along the way – became a Shaman (Medicine Man). I told the Spanish King about the golden cities. I wrote a journal about my experiences.

Who am I? Coronado I was from Spain.
I looked for golden cities but only found Cibola (Pueblo villages – clay roofs (looked like gold). Split party – one went east the other west. My group reached the Grand Canyon. The Turk told party about the city of Quivera. They searched but only found buffalo and discovered Palo Duro Canyon. The Turk was killed Coronado

Who am I? DeSoto Spain 1540 – Looking for the Seven Cities of Gold.
Explored Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Carolinas, Arkansas, and Tennessee. 1541 – discovered Mississippi River Turned back in 1542 – died before he returned DeSoto

La Salle Who am I? 1682-1686 France
I was searching for the Mississippi River. Named the Mississippi River valley Louisiana and asked King Louis XIV to start a colony there. I was shipwrecked near Matagorda Bay after not being able to locate the Mississippi river. I established Fort St. Louis in Texas and lost a lot of my party while trying to reach the Mississippi. I was later shot and killed. La Salle Who am I?

Consider this… How would the culture of Texas be different if England had sent explorers to claim land? Discuss with students a simplified explanation of the different way Spain, England, & France explored & settled. Spain: built missions England: sent settlers France: trappers for trade
